Ancient sound waves sculpted galaxy formation

Sound waves that rang out in the early universe sculpted its structure. The best measurement yet of their imprint on galaxies is a boon to dark-energy studies.

About 30,000 years after the big bang, matter collapsed around dense seeds of dark matter. Outward pressure from photons caused the collapsing matter to rebound, creating acoustic waves, like ripples in a pond. These ripples expanded until the universe cooled to a certain temperature, stalling the waves. More matter existed at the centres and edges of these ripples, and therefore should have led to more galaxies there.

This is exactly what the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) sees in a study of 265,000 galaxies. When the BOSS team measured the distance between pairs of galaxies between 4.5?billion and 6.3?billion light years from Earth, they found an excess of galaxy pairs separated by 500 million light years (arxiv.org/abs/1203.6594).

That is the expected radius of the sound waves?? if the universe's expansion has been accelerated in line with the leading model of dark energy. Called the cosmological constant, the model suggests that the amount of energy in a given volume of space does not vary with time.

The Dardennes' latest is one of their best, a memorable cinematic portrait of troubled youth and soul-saving charity.

Hunched over the handlebars, the boy's body seems to carve a hole in the wind. And we watch as this unhappy, rejected child makes some terrible choices, some of which make us want to look away.

If the film doesn't sizzle as heatedly as the Dardennes' more celebrated works, it's nevertheless infused with the compassion and care that they seem always to bring to bear on any subject.

The ending is somewhat contrived and forced, but not false, and there's a moving moment when Cyril and Samantha, riding beside a canal one sunny day, exchange bicycles.

[The Dardennes'] latest threads back to previous works in intriguing and satisfying ways...

To their credit, the Dardennes portray their subjects with a minimum of sentimentality.

It seems like a fairly minor movie, although one with major emotional pull.

Remains an effective picture with a genuine feel for human behavior, unearthing a direct sense of disturbance and a few select moments of stunning psychological clarity.

A film of rosy optimism it features a beguiling performance from screen newcomer doret who achieves a wonderfully natural, touching chemistry with de France.

Beyond Samantha's hard-to-fathom loyalty, many of the plot twists are predictable and contrived.

You wouldn't exactly call The Kid With a Bike a feel-good movie, but by the end it certainly invites the viewer to be hopeful about human nature. Another gem from the boys.

Dardenne heroes are crafty and restless, down but not out, and Cyril ought to be one of their best. For whatever reason, he isn't, quite.

Compassionate, humane but never sentimental.

While many large cities already have organized recreational sports teams that are fairly easyto join, there's a chance that your city's rec department doesn't offer any organized programs. This should not prevent you from participating! Try creating your own team with some of your friends or co-workers. Perhaps once you start a team, it'll encourage others in your community to get involved. Recreation participation promotes camaraderie and a sense of community, so whatever your athletic ability and interest may be, there's a sport for you!

Why do you get Acid Reflux? | Articles Shore

Acid reflux or heartburn affects millions of Americans every month. It is a billion dollar pharmaceutical industry with over-the-counter medication and prescriptions for individuals with more severe acid reflux problems. There are several acid reflux causes and can be something as simple as your diet to something more serious like a medical condition.

There are a variety of ways to relieve your acid reflux, but you need to first understand what the acid reflux causes are. And it starts with acid in your stomach and your esophagus. The feeling that we get known, as heartburn, is caused by stomach acid flowing back into the esophagus.

In simple terms, acid reflux is caused when acid is regurgitated back up into the esophagus because a small valve or muscle at the juncture of the esophagus and stomach, called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), did not close after food was passed into the stomach. The reasons why this happens vary. It may be an anatomical defect or just be a weak LES.

So, when you control the acid in your stomach you controlled your heartburn. More than 60 million Americans suffer from acid reflux and almost 75% of those suffering respond to medication or antacids. That leaves 25% who must either live with it or consider acid reflux surgery. The most popular surgical procedure is called the Nissen Fundoplication.

If you are considering a surgical option for acid reflux relief, then you?ll first want to make sure that you have tried to find a solution through less invasive options. You should take steps to find out the actual acid reflux causes that affect you and possible actions that you may need to take. The first step that a doctor is going to suggest to you is a dietary and lifestyle solution.

Bad eating habits and eating too large of meals are a couple of the more common acid reflux causes. When eating a large meal it causes the stomach to become distended and forces acid from the stomach back through the esophagus. Other bad eating habits include eating fatty or overly spicy foods and have been known to cause acid reflux in some individuals.

Science so far has not found a reason on why the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) doesn?t work right, and allows stomach acid to flow back into the esophagus. Some think that it?s due to pressure building up in the stomach so much that the lower esophageal sphincter cannot hold it back. Of course, there are other acid reflux causes as to.

Pregnancy is a very common acid reflux cause; although this is generally true during the third trimester. This acid reflux cause is due to the baby getting bigger and having more of the stomach contents pushed up into the esophagus. Antacids and other over the counter medication will not help with this acid reflux cause and it is found to be helpful if you eat smaller meals and a lot more of them throughout the day. The good news is that after the baby is born the acid reflux will go away and you will not be bothered by it anymore.

Everyone has a different body type and reacts to things differently. What may cause your acid reflux may not be the same reason it causes excessive stomach acid in others. Medication and antacids have found to be helpful in controlling acid production in most individuals; however, some may seek other treatments. For the most part antacids will help to control acid production. Not eating certain types of food and/or cutting back on how much you eat should help eliminate or reduce acid reflux. You should take small steps and determine your cause of excessive stomach acid to help win your battle with acid reflux.

The ART of Book Promotion | Creative Flux

In the Digital Age, promotion is a daily part of most authors? lives, whether they like it or not. Considered by many as two separate processes, writing is seen as creative and purposeful; promotion, a drudgery. Well, what if authors started thinking about promotion as part of their creative lives? What would a writer?s life look like if creativity and promotion were blended? As someone who studies book promotion all day long, I can tell you that authors who incorporate promotion into their creative lives are having a lot more fun, becoming better writers, building longer-term relationships with their readers, and selling more books than those who keep these two responsibilities separate.

What exactly am I proposing here? I?m suggesting that when we put the ?art? back in book promotion, both authors and readers benefit. Let?s start by taking a look at a few examples of this ?blending? done well.

I became aware of Colin Falconer?through a tweet that said his blog was ?seriously addictive.? The link took me to ?Looking for Mr. Goodstory?an author?s search for James Clavell?s ghost, a good bourbon, and the perfect role for Russell Crowe.??Before even exploring his posts, I knew I liked this guy. Why? Because he was clever and having fun. The first post I read was about famous last words. It was oozing with creativity, historical knowledge and whimsy.

I explored the site more fully, and found posts about Falconer?s fear of flying, ?a phobia about the kind of people who end up sitting next to me on planes.??These were humorous, short character sketches with which anyone who?d ever flown could identify: The Ear Popper, The Talker, The Sweaty Virgin, and so on.

Though I am sure Falconer mentions his books sometimes, none of the posts I read did. He simply let his writing speak for itself. He drew readers in with his craft, and he appeared to be having a great time doing this. Subtly stationed nearby was a bio, which explained that he was the author of more than twenty historical novels. Also found on the sidelines were book covers, which linked readers to more information about his books. Though historical fiction is not a genre I typically read, I wanted to learn more so I bought a digital version of Falconer?s book Seraglio.

Roz Morris is another author who came on my radar as a result of social media. I had already purchased her latest book, when I saw her January 10 guest post for Creative Flux called ??The Black Dress.? Here, Morris shared a scene she?d cut reluctantly during final revisions of My Memories of a Future Life, a novel about an injured musician who must contemplate life without her passion.

Morris?explains about the scene,

?I like its simplicity, the tiny slice it showed of a musician?s life and the totemic responsibility Carol put into one garment?.Even though it didn?t make it to the page, I like to think that she still did it, off screen in the moments we didn?t see.?

Then, Morris commits another act of creativity and shares an elegant photograph she herself took of the dress, a family heirloom that inspired the scene. The response from readers revealed a high level of emotional engagement. Not only did they empathize with her struggle as a writer to cut a scene that she loved, but the story of the black dress took on a literary life of its own.

I especially identified with one reader?s comment.

?This is a touching scene. After having read this book, I do agree that it reiterates what Carol [the musician] is feeling?.It brings back all of those pangs that I felt for her?.Thanks for sharing this melancholy reminder of a great read!?

How could "Dancing With the Stars" get any better?

Melissa Gilbert has a good cry while rehearsing with pro Maks on "Dancing."

The judges deemed last week's season premiere the series' "best ever" after two contestants ? Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins and a positively dashing Jaleel White ? scored 9s, only six points separated first place from last and the rock-bottom score was a respectable 20.

Remember Kate Gosselin getting 14?

Anyway, did the stars ? one of whom will go home tomorrow ? start buckling under the pressure tonight?

Well, it certainly wasn't the lovefest that last week was.

Katherine threw her opera-singing, lunching-with-the-queen image of demureness out the window with a jive sexy enough to be declared not Len Goodman's "cup of tea." So, obviously, Bruno Tonioli loved it and he and Carrie Ann Inaba bestowed a pair of 9s on the leggy blonde.

But they weren't the first 9s of the night ? Disney prince Roshon Fegan kicked things off with a quickstep that showed he can do elegant just as well as he brings in the funk.

Joining the upper tier of contestants once again was Bruno's favorite amateur dancer, ever, William Levy ? who was just as adorable doing the quickstep as he was sexy doing the cha-cha.

Jaleel, unfortunately, didn't bring as much bounce to his jive as we expected from the out-of-the-gate fave, and his score suffered. "The Family Matters" star, who pointed out that knocking into doors without getting hurt isn't as easy as it looks, took the biggest dive, score-wise, going from a 26 to a 22.

Maria Menounos headed in the opposite direction, impressing with her quickstep enough for a four-point jump, from 21 to 25.

Sherri Shepherd worried she wouldn't be able to handle the jive ? but she had more bounce than Jaleel! She turned in just as giddy a performance as she did last week, and she once again scored a 23.

But the real surprise came when Len apologized to Donald Driver for "undermarking" him last week. Personally, we kinda think they all undermarked him this week, too, but at least he got a nice bump after a sharp quickstep.

Gavin DeGraw also did way better, energy-wise, than last week indicated he was capable of, but it was a little too sloppy for the judges' taste.

Meanwhile, we're starting to wonder if Melissa Gilbert is being overjudged because she's partnered with the headstrong, itching-to-win Maksim Chmerkovskiy. Last week's cha-cha was very ambitious, and the "Little House on the Prairie" star seemingly rose to the occasion, but she only got a 20.

And she only got 20 this week after a seemingly more-than-competent quickstep! Does she actually stink and we're not seeing it, or are the judges paying extra-special attention to every move they make?

Lucky for Melissa, Martina Navratilova's jive was a bit of a mess. She's fit, she's strong, she looked good ? but she had no attack.

"Aw, that was sad!" Carrie Ann squealed. "Oh, my darling, I think that serve went into the net," lamented Bruno.

The Basic Process:

A small to mid-size business owner needs cash now for growth, an improvement or even to make payroll. He has outstanding invoices where clients owe him money. He won?t see the money for a month or two, sometimes even longer. This is capital that is inaccessible to him at the moment.

Auction Closing Date-The seller can set the length of the auction process.

Asset-based Financing-This is a way for small businesses to access capital through the assets or collateral of the business. In this case, the asset is the outstanding invoice and it is a creative alternative to conventional bank loans.

Discount Fee-This is the amount determined by the auction that the seller pays the buyer upon sell of the invoice. It is basically how the investor makes his money. The seller can place a maximum value that he is willing to pay.

Buyout Price-Similar to eBay?s Buy It Now feature, Sellers can set a favorable price for which he?s willing to sell the invoice and end the auction before the specified close date.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Facebook is warning employers not to demand the passwords of job applicants, saying that it's an invasion of privacy that opens companies to legal liabilities.

The social networking company is also threatening legal action against those who violate its long-standing policy against sharing passwords.

An Associated Press story this week documented cases of job applicants who are being asked, at the interview table, to reveal their Facebook passwords so their prospective employers can check their backgrounds.

In a post on Friday, Facebook's chief privacy of policy officer cautioned that if an employer discovers that a job applicant is a member of a protected group, the employer may open itself up to claims of discrimination if it doesn't hire that person.

"As a user, you shouldn't be forced to share your private information and communications just to get a job," wrote Erin Egan. "And as the friend of a user, you shouldn't have to worry that your private information or communications will be revealed to someone you don't know and didn't intend to share with just because that user is looking for a job."

Not sharing passwords is a basic tenet of online conduct. Aside from the privacy concerns, Facebook considers the practice a security risk.

Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes said that the company doesn't think employers should be asking applicants for their passwords because "we don't think it's the right thing to do."

"While we do not have any immediate plans to take legal action against any specific employers, we look forward to engaging with policymakers and other stakeholders, to help better safeguard the privacy of our users," he said.

Farmington officials consider rec center for sports participants

FARMINGTON ? This community is recreationally challenged.

There simply aren?t enough sports facilities to accommodate the growing needs of youths and adults to participate in their favorite sports, many leaders say.

For example, Parks and Recreation Director Neil Miller wanted to organize a women?s softball league this summer, but the city has no softball fields.

And the problem is hardly limited to softball. There is a shortage of soccer and football fields, and the city doesn?t have a recreational center.

City leaders want to change that situation by putting steps in place that could potentially lead to a new rec center, with parks and amenities.

Discussion of a recreation complex was one component of a retreat held by city staff and leaders at the end of February. Talks were initiated again Tuesday during a city council work session.

City Manager Dave Millheim said he thinks the time is right to move forward with a plan to potentially build a recreation center and additional sports park facilities.

He said the big question, moving forward, is how large a facility to build and how to pay for it.

The city may be ready to take baby steps toward plans in the immediate future.

Miller came forward with a plan Tuesday for the city to partner with Davis School District to plant grass on 22 acres of district property near the district?s bus garage. The area could be used for playing fields, maybe as soon as this fall.

Miller distributed a schematic showing 12 playing fields on the site. If an agreement is finalized with the district, the city would invest as much as $32,000 in planting grass and setting up a watering system for the fields this spring.

The fields could handle soccer, football and possibly lacrosse games, Miller said.

?In my mind, this is step one of seven or eight larger decisions we?ll make over the next several years,? Millheim said of the move.

During the retreat, city leaders speculated about possible partners, including the school district and the county, to address recreational issues.

Finance Director Keith Johnson estimates it would cost $11 million to $16 million to build a recreational center and a regional park.

He raised the possibility of bringing a recreational arts and parks tax before voters, similar to what is in place in Bountiful and Centerville to fund a regional theater.

The RAP tax could generate a small percentage of new sales tax from nonfood items that would be dedicated to recreational projects over a specified amount of time.

Millheim said the development of Station Park, with hotels and restaurants, would bring in outside funding to provide some help in raising money for the facilities.

Mayor Scott Harbertson said he met with Ken Sulzer, chairman of the county?s hotel/restaurant taxing committee, about the potential for a RAP tax and funding for sports facilities from hotel and restaurant tax revenue.

Johnson also raised the possibility the city could partner with the school district to build and run a regional sports complex. Such a move works in Clearfield, where the city and the district share a recreational complex at North Davis Junior High School.

City leaders talked about the potential for putting a recreational center in the same area as a sports complex, with multiple multiuse fields for a number of sports.

Millheim said, ?Our biggest challenge is, we can design a park and rec center, but is your community going to support that??
