'Sesame Street' gets new Hispanic character

NEW YORK (AP) ? As a child in Puerto Rico, Ismael Cruz was delighted by the colorful characters in "Sesame Street," who not only entertained and educated him, but helped him learn "ingl?s." He could not have imagined that two decades later he would be playing with them in front of the cameras.

Cruz is the newest Hispanic addition to popular children series' cast, playing Armando, or "Mando."

"'Sesame Street' is a magical place. It doesn't matter if you are working there or just visiting, or if you're watching on TV, that magic is always there," Cruz, 26, told The Associated Press. "I grew up watching the show, and for me it was a place that really existed and to which as a child I aspired to go, a place so diverse that I could see myself in the faces of the people that were there. Being on the set now is that, but with cameras."

Cruz's character is a Hispanic writer from Brooklyn who writes everything from short stories to essays and movie scripts. He also loves technology and social media.

The addition expands a cast of Hispanic characters that includes Maria (Sonia Manzano) and Luis (Emilio Delgado), who debuted on "Sesame Street" in 1971 as human characters, as well as Rosita, the charming turquoise monster who joined in 1993 with Mexican puppeteer Carmen Osbahr, who also voices Ovejita.

The show wants to reflect the population changes in the U.S., where Hispanics are the fastest growing minority. It also features African-American, Asian and American Indian characters.

"It's a show that's always cutting edge, that is always aware of what's going on with the population, so by including a character that is young, with new perspectives, Latino, and that bring that new generation, it is carrying on with that message," Cruz said.

Cruz grew up poor in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico, and his mother tuned in to "Sesame Street" so his son would learn English. Cruz studied music and dreamed of being an actor, eventually attending New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Before "Sesame Street," he appeared on "The Good Wife" and in films "In The Blood," ''White Alligator" and "Chaser."

The casting call for a new Hispanic character on "Sesame Street" attracted hundreds of bilingual actors last August.

"I hadn't seen it, (but) many people who knew me and read the description of what they were looking for sent me messages through Facebook, email and phone telling me, 'You have to do this audition, this is perfect for you.' And that's how I began this process," he said.

"Mando" will make his debut on the 44th season of "Sesame Street," which starts airing on September 16. Carol-Lynn Parente, executive producer of "Sesame Street," said she and her team knew immediately that Ismael was the perfect addition.

"He has a passion for creative expression and a warmth that comes right through the camera," Parente said in a statement.

PFT: Roc Nation makes pitch to represent Smith

West Virginia v TexasGetty Images

As Jets quarterback Geno Smith prepares for his first series of NFL practice sessions at the team?s rookie minicamp, one of the guys who presided over the offensive practices at Smith?s most recent stop is defending Smith from criticism.

?I never got the sense he was a diva or pampered or anything in my involvement with him,? West Virginia offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson told Brian Costello of the New York Post. ?I never had one problem with him other than he watched too much film.?

Before the draft, Nolan Nawrocki of Pro Football Weekly skewered Smith.? After the draft, Yahoo! Sports and ESPN.com published critical quotes from anonymous sources regarding Smith.

?He?s going to play for a long time,? Dawson said this week. ?I think the Jets are going to be more than happy that they have him.? He?s going to work his [butt] off. It?s almost a positive for the Jets organization because if everything would have went smooth and he had been picked in the top five he probably wouldn?t be as motivated as he is right now.

?In my talks with him after the draft, he?s so fired up right now to prove this [jerk] wrong that he?s going to work and do it.?

Compounding Smith?s problems is that his camp didn?t launch an aggressive counterattack in response to Nawrocki?s scathing scouting report.? And with Smith firing his agents only days after the draft, he had no one in place to attempt to change the narrative and alter the perception arising from the Yahoo! Sports and ESPN reports.

Perception in this context is key.? His reported plan to leave the draft (ESPN reported it, Smith has denied it) after the first night fueled the perception that he can?t handle adversity, for those who already believed that.? His decision to fire his agents in the wake of the draft fueled the perception that he?s inclined to externalize blame.

In fact, we?ve (I?ve) been criticized, primarily by those who tend to look for reasons to criticize us (me), for pointing out the connection between Smith?s reported plan to leave the draft and the reaction from those who already have a dim view of him.

It?s a reasonable at worst, dead-on 100-percent accurate at best interpretation of the impact of the behavior on the opinions of those who believe the negative things reported about Smith.? Those who think I?m biased against Smith, who played college football at West Virginia University, apparently aren?t aware of my Mountaineer connection.? (I grew up in West Virginia, went to law school in Morgantown, live 30 miles from the school, and attended every home football game that I can.)

What I wrote about Smith after the first round of the draft contained the same advice I would have given Smith if he were my client, friend, cousin, nephew, or son.

Good advice is what he and every young player (and every young person) needs.? Here?s hoping that Geno Smith gets it from everyone around him, and that he heeds it.

Kestrels, other urban birds are stressed by human activity

May 10, 2013 ? American kestrels, small colorful falcons often seen perched along roadways, are abundant in urban and agricultural areas. Shorter grass makes insects, snakes, mice and other prey more visible, and signposts, fences and telephone poles provide excellent perches. However a new study from scientists at Boise State University in Idaho shows that even species considered "tolerant" of human activity may be adversely impacted by human disturbance; Kestrels nesting in close proximity to roads and developed areas had elevated stress hormones and high rates of nest abandonment. The apparently favorable location, then, becomes an ecological trap.

The peer-reviewed paper "Reproductive failure of a human-tolerant species, the American kestrel, is associated with stress and human disturbance," was published in the British Ecological Society's Journal of Applied Ecology (May 10, 2013). Boise State University graduate student Erin Strasser, now with the Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, and Julie Heath, a professor in the Boise State Department of Biological Sciences and Raptor Research Center, conducted the research.

Strasser and Heath conducted research along one of Idaho's major expressways, Interstate 84, and in suburban and rural areas south of the state's capital city of Boise. Since 1987, researchers from Boise State and the U.S. Geological Survey have monitored a number of nest boxes located along the area's roadways, in people's back yards, and in sagebrush-steppe habitat.

In this study, Strasser and Heath were interested in understanding how human-dominated landscapes affect breeding kestrels, with particular attention paid to the link between disturbance, stress and nest failure. The two monitored the boxes to determine nest fate, and collected a small blood sample from adult birds. The researchers were looking at corticosterone levels, which indicate stress levels (the equivalent in humans is cortisol). Corticosterone can lead to behavioral and physiological changes that allow individuals to cope with stressful situations, while suppressing other activities such as reproduction.

The data showed that female kestrels nesting in areas with high human activity, such as along noisy roadways, have higher corticosterone levels, but males do not. This could be because females spend more time in the nesting box and thus are exposed more often to stressors such as vehicle noise. Too much ambient noise may make it difficult for them to assess the level of danger, leading to higher stress levels and increased vigilance behavior, decreased parental care or the decision to abandon their nest. Kestrels nesting in high disturbance areas were almost 10 times more likely to abandon their nest than those in more isolated areas, and this effect lessened the further a nest was from the road.

"We hypothesized that this was a mechanism for how humans are impacting wildlife," Heath said. "To birds, areas with human activity may be perceived as a high-risk environment."

Given that the vast majority of land in the continental United States is within a mile of a road, wildlife increasingly are exposed to chronic levels of road noise. The resulting increase in stress levels could cause fundamental changes in physiology and behavior across species inhabiting human-dominated environments, which over time could lead to population declines.

As scientists continue to connect the dots between human disturbances and the resulting long-term effects on wildlife, changes already are yielding positive results. Research conducted in preserve areas, such as state parks, has led to reduced speeds and attempts to limit noise, although noise mitigation, while locally effective, may not protect widespread populations such as kestrels from the pervasive threat of traffic noise.

The study concludes that until regulations or economic incentives are developed to encourage engineering innovations that result in quieter roads, projects in areas of human activity with favorable habitat should be discouraged to decrease the risk of ecological traps. In the meantime, Boise State's nesting boxes have been moved from freeway locations to more suitable areas.

"Birds evolved in an environment that was not dominated by humans," Heath noted. "In recent history, human roads and structures have left few areas untouched. We're just starting to understand the real consequences."

Finding A Plastic Surgeon? Best Ways To Find And Hire A Qualified ...

When faced with locating a reliable plastic surgeon, do you know where to start? Is there help available with this process? Continue reading for propositions to help you find a good plastic surgeon.

Annually, hospitals are rated and ranked based on many factors. These ratings can be reviewed to see if a local hospital made the list. Plastic Surgeons can be chosen from these facilities. Some qualities in the ratings include: number of nurses, patient volume, and level of technology available.

Have you ever used a medical referral agency? They are consistently proven to provide referrals to only the best plastic surgeons. Their whole business model revolves around their ability to do so. If they refer bad plastic surgeons they?ll lose their clients. If you want the best doc check with a referral service.

Does the office staff check on you if you must wait for more than fifteen minutes to see your plastic surgeon? Do they update you on the status of the wait time? Would they allow you to reschedule for a different appointment without accruing another co-pay?

Though a lawsuit against a plastic surgeon can be red flag, it may not be a deal breaker. Check your state licensing board for details about sanctions or suspensions on the plastic surgeon in question. The plastic surgeon may just try more risky strategies than most. Be thorough in your investigation.

Often group practices can be a good choice when searching for a new plastic surgeon. Groups of plastic surgeons can provide more coverage for their patients? appointments and emergencies. Also, they also can often share knowledge with each other of new procedures and breakthroughs.

Plenty of states make sure plastic surgeons have a clean criminal history before allowing them to become licensed. However, some don?t. Check to see what the qualifications are in your state and look into your own plastic surgeon as well. Make sure your plastic surgeon has undergone a criminal background check and is a reputable lady or gentleman.

Do you feel that your plastic surgeon is trying to get you to switch to another plastic surgeon? A good plastic surgeon will discuss any issues or concerns they have regarding your care. It is poor practice for the plastic surgeon to change their care so you look elsewhere.

Determine if the plastic surgeon can see the difference between the symptoms and the cause. If you are experiencing a headache, does the plastic surgeon look to the cause of the headache or just prescribe medication? Is a history taken to explore head injuries or other symptoms? In a fast-paced world, it is important to make sure that the plastic surgeon questions why things are happening to you instead of just addressing complaints.

PFT: Bucs CB Barber?hangs 'em?up? |? Hall-bound?

Jay-Z Signs Copies Of "Decoded"Getty Images

Jets quarterback Geno Smith could end up having Jay-Z help navigate the concrete jungle where dreams are made of.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Smith has wrapped up two days of meetings with potential successors to Select Sports Group, the agency Smith hired after completing his college career at West Virginia.? Making presentations were Joel Segal, Rick Smith of Priority Sports, Eugene Parker, Fletcher Smith, and Jay-Z?s Roc Nation agency.

CAA, which has been working with Roc Nation, wasn?t involved in the process.? Roc Nation?s presentation came from a certified NFLPA agent who works for the agency Jay-Z owns.

This development surely will cause rival agents to wonder whether and to what extent Jay-Z was or will be personally involved in the recruitment.? Since Jay-Z is not a certified NFLPA agent, the rules prevent him from trying to persuade NFL players to hire any specific NFLPA agent.

The situation becomes complicated by the reality that Jay-Z can directly contact Smith in connection with efforts to recruit Smith as a Roc Nation client for non-football representation.

Not involved in the process was Athletes First, the agency that represents Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez.? While we got the impression earlier in the week that Smith wasn?t troubled by the possibility of joint representation, it?s possible that Sanchez communicated concerns to the firm about the perception that his agents are helping Sanchez?s primary competition for the starting job.

A decision from Smith isn?t expected before the end of the weekend because Smith in the interim will be getting his first official taste of NFL football, as the Jets convene their annual rookie minicamp.? With none of the experienced quarterbacks present, Smith will have an excellent opportunity to persuade the powers-that-be that he can be ready to start as of Week One.

The first order of business for Smith?s next agent will be to remove from the former West Virginia quarterback the burden of worrying about the media, to lay the foundation for more positive coverage, and to advise Smith on how to avoid giving the media and others ammunition for fair (or unfair) criticism.

While Smith?s play eventually will shape his perception, the goal will be to persuade writers and broadcasters to give the kid the benefit of the doubt as he embarks on the challenge of playing quarterback under inherently intense and stressful circumstances, given the current state of the Jets and in light of the city where they play.

When it comes to understanding how to survive and thrive in New York, it wouldn?t hurt to get (and to heed) advice from Jay-Z.
