?Read about the new trend of multi-generational homes in the U.S. Boomers may find their empty nest is fuller than before with elderly parents or young adult children moving in with them. Sandwich Generation Boomers may be used to helping both their children (of all ages) and their aging parents, but they may not have planned for both moving in with them. Perhaps America?s best known multi-generational household was the depression era Waltons or today?s First Family. With today?s economy still in?the midsts of?a weak recovery,?grown children and elderly parents are finding it prohibitively expensive to live on their own.
Moving on in, is one way to manage tough finances. There were over four million homes in the U.S. in 2010 which housed three generations together. That was a 15% increase from 2008. And the trend continues.
It may be stressful but families are finding some upsides to it also. Built in babysitters for younger children as well as home care for older parents who may need a little assistance with routine household chores. Multi-generational households also find a financial payoff when funds are pooled, let alone a family member going through financial losses.
?Doubled up Households? where there is another adult in the home other than a spouse, have also increased, 10.7% in 2011 to nearly 22 million homes. Some of these households include an aging parent, but many are young adult children who are unemployed.
The trend is uniquely American as a phenomenon. since other countries doubled up? and multi-generational households are far more common. in any case, home builders are seeing a trend and incorporating these changes into new projects. They believe a long term impact will be extended families living together, therefore homes with extra bedrooms and baths are being planned.
Though all this togetherness?may be welcome,?for working adults to have a parent move in does mean many adjustments. if the parent is cognitively or physically impaired then it can be an added stress. Home Care is ideal in these situations as a caregiver can come in a few hours in the morning while adult children are going off to work earlier than when the parent usually starts their day. An aide can assist with bathing, dressing, make breakfast, lunch, do the laundry and serve as a companion.
Families are very adaptable. It is even retro for three generations to live together. Moving in together under one roof offers both challenges and rewards to the family as a whole.
