LOS ANGELES, July 29 (UPI) ? Increased muscle mass can reduce the chances of developing diabetes, according to a U.S. study suggests.
While previous research has focused on reducing body fat, a study by UCLA researchers suggests a link between increased muscle mass and reduced risk of diabetes, USA Today Thursday.
"Our findings suggest that beyond the focus on losing weight to improve metabolic health, may have a role in maintaining body fitness and muscle building," Preethi Srikanth, a professor of medicine at UCLA 's David Geffen School of Medicine, said.
To see if there is a correlation between higher levels of muscle mass and lower levels of insulin resistance, a precursor of diabetes, the study analyzed data from 13,644 adults who participated in a National Health and Nutrition.
The researchers found a 10 percent increase in the rate of skeletal muscle ? the proportion of muscle mass to total body weight ? corresponding to a reduction of 11 in resistance to insulin.
"Extra fat has bad effects, but more muscle has good effects," Daniel Rubin, professor of medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, says.
"These data are also consistent with the data we see in the exercise, which helps reduce the risk of diabetes, and lack of exercise and weight increase the risk of winning."
