Apple Reportedly Asking For Even Smaller SIM Card

SIM cards are pretty small. The Micro-SIM within the iPhone 4 and iPad is even smaller. But is there a need to go even smaller? One could argue that you could never actually have an electronic component that's small enough; the world of tech is constantly evolving, and having smaller SIM cards would allow for smaller phones in the future. A Reuters report suggests that Apple has already "proposed" a standard SIM card size that's smaller than the ones already in use, and that's according to an Orange executive. Orange is a cellular provider in France, so the rumor definitely has some legs.

The European telecoms standards body (ETSI) also confirmed the report, but work on the project had yet to begin. Something like this takes months, even years, to fully iron out, particularly if it's an industry-wide change that would have to be adopted on a global scale. Anne Bouverot, Orange's head of mobile services, had this to say: "We were quite happy to see last week that Apple has submitted a new requirement to ETSI for a smaller SIM form factor -- smaller than the one that goes in iPhone 4 and iPad. They have done that through the standardization route, through ETSI, with the sponsorship of some major mobile operators, Orange being one of them."

Is this a sign that Apple wants a micro-micro-SIM in the next iPhone? Given just how long something like this takes, we're thinking they may be considering such a card in the iPhone 6...should a device by that name ever surface, of course.
