September Is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month ? CBS Tampa

September is National Prostate Cancer awareness month. Every September local and nationwide medical experts offer free screening clinics and lectures. Survivors also encourage men to educate themselves about the symptoms of Prostate Cancer and inform them how important early detection and treatment is.

Prostate Cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, second only to lung cancer in the number of cancer deaths. Eight out of ten men will develop an enlarged prostate. One out of every six males will be diagnosed with the disease during his lifetime. Despite how common prostate cancer is, men lack awareness about prostate health and are reluctant to seek treatment out of embarrassment.

Some symptoms of prostate cancer are:

- Difficulty in starting urination
- Weak or interrupted flow of urine
- Frequent urination, especially at night
- Difficulty in emptying the bladder completely
- Pain or burning during urination
- Blood in the urine or semen
- Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn?t go away
- Painful ejaculation
- Some men do not have any symptoms at all.

If you have any of these symptoms, be sure to see your doctor. These symptoms may be caused by conditions other than prostate cancer. Risk factors: Men 50 years or older African-American Father, brother or son who has had prostate cancer.

In the Tampa Bay area Morton Plant Mease is presenting several special lectures and free screenings for Prostate cancer. The screenings include educational information, digital rectal exams (DRE) and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood tests.
