Montgomerie to miss first British Open in 21 years (AFP)

CASTLE STUART, Scotland (AFP) ? Last year's Ryder Cup-winning captain Colin Montgomerie will miss the British Open for the first time since making his debut in 1990 after failing to finish in the top five of the Scottish Open on Sunday.

The 48-year-old Scotsman, who has never won a major in spite of winning the European Order of Merit a record eight times, double-bogeyed on the short 11th and that ultimately cost him.

He carded a final day 70 for a share of 31st place at 10-under par, nine shots behind the winner Luke Donald in a tournament reduced to 54 holes after storms wiped out Saturday's play.

"I got in a position and it's disappointing," said the former world number two. "It was going well and then I sort of ran out of puff. I'm just driving home now and it will sink in then."

It ends a run of 21 straight appearances for last year's Ryder Cup captain at the game's oldest tournament, which this year marks its 140th edition.

He made his first British Open appearance at St Andrews in 1990 when he finished in a tie for 48th. His best performance was at the same venue in 2005 when he came second to Tiger Woods.

"It's very disappointing as I just came up too short, so there you go," he said.

The final place at Royal St George's went instead to his fellow Scotsman Scott Jamieson, the 27-year old Tour rookie holing a 20-foot birdie putt on 18 in a round of 69 that netted him a share of third.

"I wasn't sure how important that putt was," said Jamieson. "I can't believe I'm in The Open - it's great. First major, hopefully many more to come."
