The Annoyance of the Three Paragraph Essay | Books - Writing ...

So we begin where we have so diligently been instructed to start, at the beginning. Our teachers berate us over topic sentences and main ideas using the terms interchangeably but stressing that they are distinctively different from each other. It is that paradox which boggles my mind and evokes writer?s block. I like to consider that I have more fulfilling things to do than to keep track of which is which in my first paragraph. I would much rather get a root canal than agonize over some imaginary division between essential two words that mean the same thing to me. Remember that the topic sentence is to introduce the subject matter. For example a proper topic sentence for piece of work would be, ?I hate three paragraph essays.? The main idea would probably be the same thing but together differently or I think you have to explain it. After deliberating through that issue and introducing the topic we are told to write a transitional sentence and push ourselves to get to the bulk of the essay where you explain your subject.

Most instructors dictate that you have at least three points of defense and/or explanation. I assume three was chosen because it is the number of the trinity or because it was inspired by Hitler?s Third Reich. The three paragraph essay is stifling to creative expression in its rigid structure. An English teacher once tried to explain the divinity of the three paragraph essay by comparing it to a triangle saying, ?The triangle is one of the strongest structural shapes, which can endure a great amount of weight that?s what makes it perfect for an essay.?

I personally don?t appreciate the comparison, because in my opinion the triangle is the most dangerous shape. It has pointy ends which can break skin depending on the degree of the angle, but that?s geometry. It has also been brought to my attention that a three paragraph essay looks like a fat chick. A small light bit of writing on top followed by a heavy middle section ending with a little bubble of words for feet. It just isn?t proportional or aesthetically pleasing. The three paragraph essay also doesn?t lend itself to an agreeable flow of thoughts. Everything of significance is crammed into the center.

Three paragraph essays read more like an E. E. Cummings poem
whereeverythingisranintoexaggeratetherateofspeechorthought. Jokes aside, it really does push everything in to close together. Readers that skim through derive very little because there are no breaks between the thoughts to slow them down to take matters into consideration. New ideas should not just be broken down into sentences they can be expanded into paragraphs so one has more room to explain. Having only one paragraph pressures writers to use concise words, and let?s face it some of us don?t like to visit words outside of: good, bad, cool, dumb, and weird.

The three paragraph essay of course cannot do without the conclusion. So, this gives the writer an opportunity to be redundant by saying what they have already wasted our time with. Three paragraph essays are rigid, terribly proportioned, and dull to look at and read. That?s why writing three paragraph essays are annoying to write.

Coast Guard: BP well not leaking (AP)

NEW ORLEANS ? Federal officials investigating reports of small amounts of oil popping up on the Gulf of Mexico surface near where a BP well blew out last year said Friday they found no oil leaking from seafloor wells.

This week the Coast Guard and BP sent deep-sea robots down to the disaster site and no leaks were found at the well or at two other wells drilled during the months-long work to get the out-of-control well capped. They said no sheens were seen on the surface either.

"We saturated that area by both air and sea," said Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer John Edwards. "With no known origin, this sheen ranks up there among the thousands of other quote-unquote mystery sheens that happen every day in the Gulf."

Apparently there was a leak somewhere ? perhaps from a natural seep on the seafloor or some other source, even drilling equipment that sank to the seafloor after the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded on April 20, 2010, killing 11 workers and sparking the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history. The BP well spewed about 200 million gallons of oil last year.

Ed Overton, a Louisiana State University chemist leading efforts to analyze the BP spill, said samples from sheens found earlier in the week near the site of the disaster matched the fingerprint of the crude that spewed from BP's well.

"It is essentially identical," Overton told The Associated Press when reached by telephone Friday. "It means that it is oil that came from that general area."

He said the amount of oil found was very small and that the sheen ? reported by the Press-Register newspaper in Mobile, Ala., this week._ may have amounted to as little as a gallon of oil. "This is a leak of a real small amount of oil," he said. "We're not looking at a repeat of last summer."

Because the sheen was so small, he said it might be coming from a leak that would be hard to find, perhaps from a "fissure in source rock or from somewhere else."

Overton said it was possible the oil could be from the mile-long pipe called a riser that extended between the Deepwater Horizon and the well when the blowout occurred. The riser, along with the Deepwater Horizon, sank to the bottom of the Gulf. He said oil may have been trapped in the riser and is only now dribbling out. He said the small sheens documented this week resembled leaks in the past found escaping from sunken damaged vessels.

But he added that the oil might have come from a natural seep from the same oil reservoir the BP well was tapping into. There are natural seeps in the area.

BP said it had not sent remotely operated vehicles to look for leaks along the riser, which it said belonged to Transocean Ltd., the drilling company that owned the Deepwater Horizon.

Brian Kennedy, a Transocean spokesman, said the company had not conducted a survey of the riser. He called it implausible for oil to be leaking from that structure.

Federal officials said they did not look at the riser during the recent deep-sea probes of BP's wells.

How to prepare, really, tips from a hurricane vet

ATLANTIC Beach, N.C. -- I've covered hurricanes from El Salvador to Montauk, on the tip of Long Island, for three decades.

There's no question hurricanes are a hassle. What you don't want to learn is that they can also be deadly.

Here are a few tips that may not be on the usual lists suggesting provisions of food, water, and batteries.

* Ignore your inner-self that wants to think this is all hype.
Hurricane force winds and storm surge are real and there is nothing you can do at the last minute to push back.

*Find comfortable cotton clothes. You will lose power and that means it will get hot. Hurricanes leave you locked inside thick humidity, so you want to be comfortable. Baby powder is nice to have and forget the jeans, they're just plain uncomfortable.

*Choose the spot you will hunker down. (Ideally that will be an interior room with a load-bearing wall with no windows).? Don't go to the basement as that could fill up with water and you could drown (drowning is the leading cause of death during a hurricane).

*Prepare that room for comfort. Pillows, food, board games to pass the time.? And if you can squeeze a mattress in that room, do so. Why?? If the hurricane breaches your home, windows break, roofs tear off, you can hunker down under that mattress in your interior room.? Ask survivors of Hurricane Andrew in South Florida and two out of three will tell you that's how they made it thru that storm. The most popular spot to go is also the most uncomfortable, the bathroom.

*Fill your bathtub with water and find a bucket.? After the storm, if you lose power and the toilet won't flush, take a bucket of water from the tub, hold it waist high and dump it quickly into the toilet. You toilet will flush.

*Go to your balcony, or around your home and pull in the planters.? Those small items can become missiles in the storm. In the tropics, one of the biggest concerns is coconuts going airborne in a hurricane force wind. It can become a cannon ball.

*Don't ride out the storm alone.? It can be scary when you hear creaks and other sounds that you have never heard before. Together you can reassure each other that things are ok.

*Skip the alcohol. Hurricane parties are always popular, but if there is a calamity and you have to think on your feet quickly, the last thing you want to do it be impaired. I know lots of folks will ignore this tip, so my only advice is moderation is your friend.

Remember, Irene is moving slowly, so this will be a long haul.? If the eye passes directly over you, you'll be tempted to go outside.

It's a rare experience to see the eye: calm skies, birds flying, just?beautiful.?Just remember, the winds are strongest right up against that eye-wall and if you're outside, you could die.?

Finally, don't rely on anyone but yourself.

German and Chinese data lift world stocks, euro (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? World stocks, the euro and commodity prices advanced on Tuesday after gauges of Chinese and German manufacturing activity were not as weak as some had feared.

Investors took heart from the flash purchasing managers' indexes from Germany and China, which, although showing the factory sector was likely to slow, indicated the motors of the global economy in recent years were still growing robustly.

"Any data that just hints that the world is not ending is going to be well received by the markets," Ian Richards, European equity strategist at RBS, said.

Financial markets have stabilized in the past two sessions after two weeks of turmoil which reignited fears of a new crash to match that of 2008.

World stocks measured by MSCI All-Country World Index advanced 1 percent, though the benchmark is still down more than 12 percent this month.

Europe's FTSEurofirst 300 index rose 1.8 percent, extending the previous session's 0.8 percent rise, while Tokyo's Nikkei average ended 1.2 percent higher.

Some investors were also hoping the U.S. Federal Reserve would flag further stimulus when central bankers gather in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, late this week, a year after Chairman Ben Bernanke launched a second round of government bond buying program, known as quantitative easing, to revive the economy.

"There is also the fact that much of the gains being seen here seem to be coming off the expectation that the Fed will serve up further stimulus measures, possibly as soon as the end of this week," said Cameron Peacock, market analyst at IG Markets.

"Clearly with this being priced in, failure to deliver here will see traders heading for the exits once again."

For now investors seemed to be happy chasing riskier assets after recent sell-off on worries over global economic growth and the euro zone sovereign debt crisis.

The euro was up 0.5 percent at $1.4436 on Tuesday, while the Australian dollar edged 0.9 percent higher to $1.0491.

The dollar was down 0.2 percent at 76.66 yen, still holding above record low of 75.94 yen struck late last week as market players were wary of any yen-selling intervention by Japanese authorities.

Copper gained 1.4 percent to trade above $8,800 a tonne, and crude prices rose 0.5 percent to below $109 a barrel as fighting in Libya continued and in anticipation of a fall in U.S. crude stockpiles.

Nevertheless, gold struck another record high above $1,910 an ounce before slipping 0.7 percent to below $1,900.

Although the NFL publicly has claimed that the five-game suspension of former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor does not represent the first step in an effort by the NFL to help the NCAA enforce its eligibility rules, the private communication from Commissioner Roger Goodell to Pryor makes clear the league?s belief that NCAA rules violations can, and should, jeopardize NFL eligibility.

In Goodell?s letter of August 18, 2011 to Pryor, a copy of which PFT has obtained, Goodell outlines the facts relating to Pryor?s NCAA rules violations, and regarding Pryor?s decision to leave school, hire an agent, and enter the NFL?s supplemental draft.

?I do not believe that a player who has affirmatively acted contrary to NCAA rules should automatically and immediately be deemed eligible to pursue a potentially lucrative career in the NFL,? Goodell writes.? ?Doing so would be inconsistent with common-sense notions of accountability and personal responsibility, and distorts our own eligibility principles.? Accordingly, I believe that it would be entirely appropriate to find you ineligible for the Supplemental Draft, and to require you to defer entry into the NFL until the regular April 2012 College Draft.?

Though Goodell then softened his position to mirror the five-game suspension that was imposed by Ohio State late last year on Pryor, the link between the sanction and Pryor?s NCAA violations is clear.? Goodell even cites ?the NFL?s historic support for college football? in explaining the decision.

And so, while the league insists that the Pryor suspension sets no precedent, the letter provides a window into Goodell?s mind regarding the issue of NCAA violations.? That belief will continue to be a factor in any similar cases that land on Goodell?s desk.

Whether or not this constitutes a ?precedent? is a matter of semantics.? The NFL, under Goodell, believes that the ?historic support for college football? includes erecting barriers to entering the NFL when players have violated NCAA rules.? The NFL, under Goodell, should thus be expected to adopt a similar attitude and mindset in the future, regardless of whether violations were uncovered before or after the player joins the NFL.

That?s why Pryor needs to appeal the decision.? It?s not just about him ? it?s about the question of whether the NFLPA will allow Goodell to rely upon vague notions of ?detrimental conduct? to fashion specific sanctions that fit his intended outcome in each given case, regardless of whether the broader approach reflects any sense of consistency, justice, or fairness.

Conflicts around the world are both changing and, in some measure, declining. One big reason: The art of conflict resolution and the numbers of people practicing it have risen.

Audiences at a beauty pageant often cringe when a contestant, asked about her life goal, responds ?I want to promote world peace!? These days, however, that?s not such a bad profession to be in.

Over the last 15 years, the world community has not only learned more about preventing and ending conflicts but the success rate for peacemaking has also gone up.

A number of research groups keep track of conflicts around the globe ? their numbers, their origins, and their resolutions. Most find hope for reducing war and violence in some measure because of people who, yes, promote peace.

Compared to the 20th century, many more conflicts these days are being negotiated to a conclusion than are being started. ?Wars between states are far less common than they were in the past,? declares a 2011 World Bank report, ?and civil wars are declining in number.?

The best explanation, says longtime peace activist Gareth Evans, ?is simply the massive increase in international activism ? across the whole spectrum of conflict prevention, conflict management, and post-conflict peace building activity.?

Peacemaking operations, for example, have tripled since 1989 to more than 30 places worldwide. And, Mr. Evans notes, there was a tenfold rise in the number of groups that support peacemaking and follow-on initiatives from 1991 to 2007.

Mediators have become better at negotiating peace deals that stick and the United Nations has become better at peacekeeping. In the 1990s some 45 percent of peace settlements broke down within five years. In the first years of the new century the success rate was closer to 85 percent.

Defining peace, let alone measuring it, is almost as challenging as achieving it. Still, many groups try.

The Australia-based Institute for Economics & Peace, for example, has issued a ?Global Peace Index? for each of the last five years, ranking 153 countries on 23 indicators for their level of conflict and violence ? or ?peacefulness.?

Its latest report reveals that in two indicators ? military spending and relations between neighboring states ? the world is more at peace over the past year. Still, the level of violence went up, in large part because of the pro-democracy upheavals in North Africa and the Middle East, mainly in Libya, Syria, Bahrain, and Yemen.

Yet that violence in the region may end up ending the inherently unstable dictatorships there and bring about peace-promoting democracies ? as could be the case for Egypt and Tunisia.

Another ?conflict counter? is the Human Security Report which comes out of Canada?s Simon Fraser University. In a report last December, it found ?serious? conflicts (those with 1,000 or more reported battle deaths per year) and mass killings have seen an 80 percent decline since the early 1990s. ?Long-term trends are reducing the risks of both international and civil wars,? the report stated.

What are some of those trends ? beyond better peace promotion?

1. Greater interdependence between nations, mainly through trade.

2. The growth of better governance, through more democracies and anticorruption campaigns.

3. Less ideology-driven wars ? except for radical Islamic groups (which have declining Muslim support).

4. Rising use of visual technology such as cellphone cameras to record violence ? and then using it to shame or convict perpetrators.

Such trends help redefine peace as something other than a lack of violence. The world is adapting higher values, such as justice and a reverence for life. Peace is being seen more as the natural state for humanity.

Still, one in four people still live in conflict-affected states or in countries with very high levels of criminal violence. The region with the least peace is Sub-Saharan Africa. And the nature of conflict itself is constantly changing.

?Norms about wars, and especially about the protection of civilians caught up in them, have evolved rapidly, far more so than anyone would have guessed even half a century ago,? writes scholar Joshua S. Goldstein in the latest Foreign Policy magazine.

?Similarly rapid shifts in norms preceded the ends of slavery and colonialism, two other scourges that were once also considered permanent features of civilization. So don?t be surprised if the end of war, too, becomes downright thinkable.?

Santa Rosa nonprofit gets $1 million Kaiser grant to fight obesity ...

SANTA ROSA ? Kaiser Permanente has given a $1 million grant to the Community Activity and Nutrition Coalition of Sonoma County to help curb obesity and promote healthful eating in the Kawana Springs and Roseland neighborhoods of south Santa Rosa.

The coalition, also known as Can-C, is an alliance of individuals, professionals and community-based organizations focused on improving healthful eating and active living. The investment is part of Kaiser?s new three-year, $10 million Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Zones initiative across Northern California.

The HEAL Zones are designed to help make healthful choices accessible to more people in underserved communities ? and in turn to prevent diseases such as diabetes and hypertension that often result from obesity. The project is supported by Kaiser Permanente through a fund they established at the East Bay Community Foundation.

?We are thrilled to receive this funding from Kaiser Permanente because it will allow us to work with residents to make changes that reflect the specific needs of our community,? said Anthony Taylor, health program manager with the County of Sonoma Department of Health Services, the coordinating agency for the grant. ?The partnership with Kaiser Permanente is invaluable in the campaign to fight chronic diseases associated with overweight and obesity here in Sonoma County.?

In addition to Santa Rosa,? six other Northern California communities received $1 million HEAL Zones grants:

1. Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco
2. Madera in Fresno
3. Modesto
4. Monument in Concord
5. Richmond
6. South Sacramento

Kaiser will also dedicate an additional $3 million to technical and evaluation support as well as other Northern California place-based community investments over the next three years.

?In the first five years of the HEAL work, we saw increased physical activity, greater availability of healthy food in corner stores, improvement of our local parks and creation of safe walkways,? said Yvette Radford, Kaiser?s regional vice president of external and community affairs. ?We also learned that going forward, we could make a greater impact by concentrating our efforts in smaller, more targeted areas.?For Kaiser Permanente, the HEAL Zones are much more than just funding. They are an extension of the work in our medical centers, and our commitment to helping create healthy individuals and healthy communities.?

LOS ANGELES, July 29 (UPI) ? Increased muscle mass can reduce the chances of developing diabetes, according to a U.S. study suggests.

While previous research has focused on reducing body fat, a study by UCLA researchers suggests a link between increased muscle mass and reduced risk of diabetes, USA Today Thursday.

"Our findings suggest that beyond the focus on losing weight to improve metabolic health, may have a role in maintaining body fitness and muscle building," Preethi Srikanth, a professor of medicine at UCLA 's David Geffen School of Medicine, said.

To see if there is a correlation between higher levels of muscle mass and lower levels of insulin resistance, a precursor of diabetes, the study analyzed data from 13,644 adults who participated in a National Health and Nutrition.

The researchers found a 10 percent increase in the rate of skeletal muscle ? the proportion of muscle mass to total body weight ? corresponding to a reduction of 11 in resistance to insulin.

"Extra fat has bad effects, but more muscle has good effects," Daniel Rubin, professor of medicine at Temple University School of Medicine, says.

"These data are also consistent with the data we see in the exercise, which helps reduce the risk of diabetes, and lack of exercise and weight increase the risk of winning."

White House condemns Syria's Assad about violence (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama emphasized his deep concern about the Syrian government's use of violence against civilians in a phone call Thursday with Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, the White House said.

The two leaders agreed that the bloodshed must end immediately, the White House said. Separately, presidential spokesman Jay Carney stopped just short of calling for President Bashar Assad's ouster, saying Syria "would be a much better place without him."

"We believe that President Assad's opportunity to lead the transition has passed," Carney told reporters traveling on Air Force One with Obama to an appearance in Michigan.

The developments came as violence escalated against demonstrators in Syria and as the Obama administration, which announced new sanctions against Syria on Wednesday, appeared to move closer to calling directly for Assad to step down.

The White House said Obama and Erdogan also agreed that the demands of the Syrian people for a transition to democracy must be met, and that the pair agreed to consult closely in the coming days as the situation in Syria develops.

A number of foreign diplomats have traveled to Damascus urging Assad to end a campaign of killing. Turkey's foreign minister was among those who've met with Assad. And on Thursday, Robert Ford, the U.S. ambassador to Syria, met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem in Damascus.

State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Ford made clear "that Syria is going to face increasing pressure if the violence doesn't end" and that empty rhetoric wouldn't satisfy demands for reforms.

Ford "challenged the regime's lip service about enacting reform, and he called for free and open access for the media," Nuland told reporters.

She said Ford also demanded strict adherence from Syrian authorities with their obligations to protect diplomatic personnel. Pro-government protesters stormed the U.S. Embassy in Damascus in July.
