Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Family to Include Another 2560?1600 Tablet

galaxy-tab-3

Samsung and Google came up with the first ultra high 2560?1600 resolution tablet, the Nexus 10, which put it at an exact 300 PPI pixel density. While most manufacturers still seem to be stuck on the 1920?1200 resolution (except Vizio), Samsung will be offering another such high-resolution tablet this year, as part of the Galaxy Tab 3 family.

Considering Samsung?s latest trend of putting the S-pen into all their high-end, and even mid-end, devices, I assume this tablet might be the next-gen Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet. But that may not arrive for a while (late summer or so), and it?s possible Samsung wants to launch another such high-resolution tablet soon, that isn?t the next-gen Note 10.1 per se.

The codename for this tablet is?GT-P8200, and there are other 2 other tablets with the names?GT-P3200 and GT-P5200. The other two are presumably a 7? tablet with a 1024?600 resolution, and an 8? tablet with a 1280?800 resolution, which is probably the Galaxy Tab 8.0, which I?ve already said has a pretty low resolution for 2013, and given its rumored price.

The 10? tablet seems to only have the Exynos 5 Dual processor we?ve seen in Nexus 10, and I suppose for a spring release, it?s not too bad, if it maintains the same price, too. Think of it of a Nexus 10 that gets S-pen support, and all the S-pen enabled apps ? although without stock Android, and probably fewer updates as well.

I like Samsung?s strategy of adding an S-pen to more and more of their devices. That should only expand the S-pen ecosystem for drawing apps and productivity apps that require handwriting recognition. I wish Google would?ve taken charge of this with stock Android, but they are not, so Samsung remains the next best thing for now. You do however remain a bit locked into their ecosystem if you want many drawing apps with good active pen support.

What I don?t like so much about these 3 upcoming tablets, is that they don?t feel very exciting overall. They seem more like filler devices for the spring season, with the now old Galaxy S3 design, and with the same specs from last year. We might have to wait until the 2nd half of the year for the true ?next-gen? devices with Exynos 5 Octa processors, and higher resolutions (for the lower-end devices).

Philadelphia opera co.: New name, new vision

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The Opera Company of Philadelphia is getting a new name that officials say is in better harmony with the organization's move toward more innovative programming, public outreach and greater diversity in its repertoire.

The company announced Tuesday, in conjunction with the unveiling of the 2013-2014 season, it will now be known simply as Opera Philadelphia. The new name and logo will appear on all of its brochures and ads.

"The rebranding is not just an expression of Opera Philadelphia's future ambitions but the next step in a creative journey that began several years ago," said David Devan, the company's president and general director.

Opera Philadelphia plans to continue bringing free performances to new audiences in famous Philadelphia locations, both with surprise "flash mob" mini-concerts as well as a live outdoor simulcast.

As in the past, the opera's spontaneous "Random Acts of Culture" performances in 2013-2014 will be announced on Twitter shortly before they begin. And on Sept. 28, Verdi's "Nabucco" will be broadcast from the august Academy of Music live ? and free ? on a high-definition screen outdoors on Independence Mall.

Last year's "Random Acts of Culture" at popular downtown spots like Macy's and the Reading Terminal Market received widespread kudos and millions of views on YouTube, and 3,000 people gathered on Independence Hall's lawn last fall for a simulcast of "La Boheme."

"Nabucco," a Philadelphia Opera premiere, opens the 2013-2014 season and is followed by Mozart's classic "Don Giovanni" and "Ainadamar: An Opera in Three Images," the Grammy-winning first opera from Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov that tells the story of Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca.

Rounding out the season in 2014 are the Curtis Opera Theater's new production of Francis Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites" and the East Coast premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon's "A Coffin in Egypt," a new commission and production in partnership with the Houston Grand Opera starring celebrated mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade.

"We believe this season embraces this art form in its entirety, for the full enjoyment of our local, national and international audiences," said Corrado Rovaris, Opera Philadelphia's music director.

Opera Philadelphia said it has five new operas in development and aims to present challenging contemporary works along with more standard fare.

The company was formed through the 1975 merger of the Philadelphia Lyric Opera Company and the Philadelphia Grand Opera Company.

'Loser' shocker: Jillian reveals her gentle side

Mitchell Haaseth / NBC

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

Gentle Jillian Michaels? As strange as that phrase may sound to fans of "The Biggest Loser" (not to mention former contestants), the tough-talking, take-no-nonsense trainer actually put the tough talk on hold this week as she faced the possibility of getting booted off the ranch alongside her last remaining team member.

Five weeks into the competition, Jillian had already said "so long" to four of her five hopefuls. Her only shot to stay in the game (beyond helping teen Sunny back home) came down to Danni -- Danni, who long ago let Jillian know that she required encouragement and positive feedback in the gym.

And that's just what Jillian offered her. Rather than risk pushing what's left of Team White away with her typical take-no-prisoners style, she took a risk and showed her softer side throughout the week.

Danni, for her part, put her all into every aspect of the competition. When she wasn't working out with Gentle Jillian, she was acing challenges.

The first challenge required players to buy all of their groceries for the week on a budget of $10 a day -- and they had just 15 minutes to do it. Danni, who had no other teammates to pool her resources with, ended up with a packed cart and $8 to spare.

Later, during a swimming challenge, she finished in first place and won a 2-pound advantage on the scale.

But while everything seemed to be going Danni's way, Jillian started to have her doubts.

"At this moment, I'm second guessing myself a lot," Jillian said before Danni stepped on the scale. "I did something different this week. I didn't go crazy or push like I normally did in the past, and I'm now hating myself for that. We're going to lose this weigh-in, and if we do, she's not the only one going home."

But in the end, Jillian found out that sometimes the soft touch is also the winning touch. Danni dropped 9 pounds, putting her percentage of weight loss far above the other teams.

"It just feels so good to have her smile at me," Danni said of Jillian after the weigh-in. "I think right now is the best moment I've had since I've been here."

Of course, while Danni celebrated her best night on the ranch, the night took a turn for the worse for another player. The red team landed in last place and voted out Lisa.

There's no need to feel too bad for the teacher and mom of four. During the where-are-they-now update, Lisa revealed that she's still on track and has now lost a total of 76 pounds.

What did you think of the rare glimpse of the gentle side of Jillian Michaels? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Tumor cells engineer acidity to drive cell invasion

Monday, January 28, 2013

Researchers at Moffitt Cancer Center and colleagues at Wayne State University School of Medicine investigated the acidity in solid tumors to determine if pH levels play a role in cancer cell invasion in surrounding tissues. They found that an acidic microenvironment can drive cancer cells to spread and propose that neutralizing pH would inhibit further invasion, providing a therapeutic opportunity to slow the progression of cancers.

Their study appeared in the Jan. 3 online release of Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

According to the study's corresponding author, Robert J. Gillies, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Cancer Imaging & Metabolism at Moffitt, acidity in solid tumors is the result of an increased fermentative metabolism combined with poor delivery of blood to tissues.

In this study, tumor invasion and pH were monitored in immunodeficient laboratory mice hosting a variety of tumors. "We monitored the test animals over time using microscopy and found that the highest regions of tumor invasion corresponded to areas with the lowest pH," Gillies explained. "Tumor invasion did not occur in regions with normal or near normal pH levels. Furthermore, when we neutralized the acidity with oral sodium bicarbonate, the invasion was halted."

Researchers proposed that the acidic pH of the tumor microenvironment represents a "niche engineering" strategy on the part of tumor cells, promoting invasion and growth of malignant tumors into surrounding tissue. Niche engineering is a concept in ecology describes how plants and animals alter their environment to in ways that promote their own growth and survival over their competitors. "We have long regarded cancers cells as an invading species," said study co-author Robert Gatenby, M.D., chair of the Diagnostic Imaging Services and Integrated Mathematical Oncology departments at Moffitt.

A key to this process of adaptation and invasion is increased glucose metabolism in the tumor. "The vast majority of malignant tumors metabolize glucose at high rates," Gillies said. "We have proposed that there is a direct, causative link between increased glucose metabolism and the ability of cancer cells to invade and metastasize."

According to the research, elevated glucose metabolism is the cause of increased acidity in the tumor microenvironment. Most tumors develop an abnormal vascular network that tends to be poorly organized and leaky, disrupting blood flow and hampering the delivery of oxygen.

"This poorly organized vascular system has a two-fold effect on tumor acidity," explained Gatenby. "First, it subjects tumor regions to poor perfusion, which restricts oxygen and increases the rate of glucose fermentation. Second, the poor perfusion hampers the ability to eliminate the resulting acids, resulting in very low pH in surrounding tissues."

As tumor cells adapt to increasing acidity, niche engineering through normal cell death and new blood vessel formation occurs in the tumor and the immune response is suppressed.

"Tumor cells perform niche engineering by creating an acidic environment that is not toxic to the malignant cells but, through its negative effects on normal cells and tissues, promotes local invasion of malignant cells," Gatenby said.

The researchers suggested that targeting this activity with buffers and other mechanisms aimed at increasing pH levels will likely provide a valuable alternative to traditional therapies focused entirely on killing tumor cells.

Mali rebels torch ancient library in Timbuktu

Thousands of residents came out to celebrate after French and Malian troops entered the town of Gao on Sunday, with a parade of motorbikes honking their horns and people weeping in disbelief. Lindsey Hilsum of the UK's Channel 4 News reports.

By Adama Diarra and Richard Valdmanis, Reuters

GAO, Mali -- French and Malian troops on Monday sealed off Timbuktu, a UNESCO World Heritage site, but fleeing Islamist rebel fighters torched several buildings in the ancient Saharan trading town, including a library of priceless manuscripts.

Without a shot being fired to stop them, 1,000 French soldiers including paratroopers and 200 Malian troops seized the airport and surrounded the centuries-old Niger River city, looking to block the escape of al-Qaida-allied fighters.

The retaking of Timbuktu followed the swift capture by French and Malian forces at the weekend of Gao, another major northern Malian town which had also been occupied by the alliance of Islamist militant groups since last year.

A two-week intervention by France in its former Sahel colony, at the request of Mali's government but also with wide international backing, has driven the Islamist rebel fighters northwards out of towns into the desert and mountains.

A French military spokesman said the assault forces at Timbuktu were being careful to avoid combat inside the city so as not to damage cultural treasures and mosques and religious shrines in what is considered a seat of Islamic learning.

But Timbuktu's mayor, Ousmane Halle, reported that fleeing Islamist fighters had torched a South African-funded library in the city containing thousands of priceless manuscripts.

A French soldier in Mali on Sunday.

"The rebels set fire to the newly constructed Ahmed Baba Institute built by the South Africans ... this happened four days ago," Halle Ousmane told Reuters by telephone from Bamako. He said he had received the information from his chief of communications who had traveled south from the city a day ago.

Ousmane was not able to immediately say how much the concrete building had been damaged. He added the rebels also torched his office and the home of a member of parliament.

The Ahmed Baba Institute, one of several libraries and collections in the city containing fragile ancient documents dating back to the 13th century, is named after a Timbuktu-born contemporary of William Shakespeare and houses more than 20,000 scholarly manuscripts. Some were stored in underground vaults.

'Free as the wind'
The French and Malians have faced no resistance so far at Timbuktu, but they face a tough job of combing through the labyrinth of ancient mosques and monuments and mud-brick homes between alleys to flush out any hiding Islamist fighters.

"We have to be extremely careful. But in general terms, the necessary elements are in place to take control," French army spokesman Lieutenant Thierry Burkhard said in Paris.

Timbuktu member of parliament El Hadj Baba Ha?dara told Reuters in Bamako the Islamist rebels had abandoned the city. "They all fled. Before their departure they destroyed some buildings, including private homes," he said.

The United States and European Union are backing the French-led Mali operation as a strike against the threat of radical Islamist jihadists using the West African state's inhospitable Sahara Desert as a launch pad for international attacks.

In the first installment of Rock Center's Hidden Planet series, Richard Engel travels to Mali, on the edge of the Sahara desert, to discover the city of Timbuktu.

They are helping with intelligence, airlift of troops, refueling of planes and logistics, but do not plan to send combat troops to Mali.?

In Gao, crowds celebrated the arrival of French forces. Many smoked cigarettes, women went unveiled and some men wore shorts to flout the severe Shariah Islamic law the rebels had imposed for months. Youths on motorcycles flew the flags of Mali, France and Niger, whose troops also helped secure the ancient town on the Niger River.

"Now we can breathe freely," said Hawa Toure, 25, wearing a colorful traditional African robe banned under Shariah for being too revealing. "We are as free as the wind today. We thank all of our friends around the world who helped us," she said.

About a dozen rebels were killed in Gao, while French forces suffered no losses or injuries, the?French defense ministry?said.

Youths in Gao said there were still some rebels and rebel sympathizers around, but they were being found. "Yesterday, even, we found one hiding in a house. We cut his throat," one man said, asking not to be named. "Today we found another and we brought him to the army."

A third northern town, the Tuareg seat of Kidal, in Mali's rugged and remote northeast, remains in rebel hands.

Get Much Needed Help With Internet Marketing Advice | Jim ...

Mistakes Are Costing You! Learn To Stop?Making ALL 189 Of Them!

Struggling With WordPress? 100+ Step-By-Step Videos Now Available!

Posted by Administrator on Jan 26, 2013 in Uncategorized | Comments Off

Even novice PC users have created flourishing businesses, and you could be next. The following article will give you the information you need to become a successful Internet marketer.

Every email you send out should ask your customers to take a specific action right away. The action may be to visit a particular place online or to make a certain purchase. This also gives you valuable insight on your email campaign?s effectiveness since you can track each of these actions.

TIP! Use tech tools to help measure how many visitors become customers to help improve your marketing strategy. The most successful sites use customizable applications that track site statistics like sales and traffic.

Use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a part of your Online marketing campaign. You can communicate quickly on social media websites, giving your customers messages about sales and promotions. However, it is important that your comments or tweets are not overly promotional in nature. Try to keep your posts valuable and insightful, and only include marketing in a portion of them.

Allow customers to post reviews on your site. User reviews can help boost sales as well as increase your online presence.

The appearance and performance of your website is just as important as the in-store buying experience. Make sure you always test your links and ads to ensure that they work for your visitors. Costumers will leave if your site is not working properly.

TIP! It is a good idea to keep contact information for your customers. Give your clients the opportunity to opt-in to signing up with a subscribe link or making their email address part of the ordering process.

Make a game if you want to attract others to your website. Customers love to play free games online, and that can keep people coming back for more after they play once. Use the game for subtle product advertising. If you are a purveyor of pet supplies, for example, you might design a canine companion game that incorporates specific products and services you offer.

You should guarantee your products and say so in each of your advertisements. Customers want to know that your product is a sure bet before they part with their hard-earned cash. The only limit to what you can guarantee is what you decide it to be. Two options are 90 day guarantees and lifetime guarantees. Tailor your guarantee to your product.

Ask for opinions from people who don?t choose to buy from you by adding a simple feedback form after your sales pitch. If they decided not to purchase because of a problem with your website, you can improve it.

TIP! Contemplate the various methods you are interested in using in your web design efforts. For example, you may find that some of the best ways to go about marketing your site won?t cost you a single penny.

It is important to know what audience you want to reach and what sort of content will make them want to visit your site. Knowing who you want to reach makes it easier to produce content that will bring visitors back to your site again and again.

When it comes to Web marketing, be sure customers are aware that your site?s checkout process is secure. Many online users are reluctant to provide personal or financial details over the Internet, so it is important to assuage them with guarantees that this information is truly safe.

You could give a part of your profit to a charity if you believe your audience will be interested in helping out a good cause. This should be clearly advertised, though not too excessively, on your website. You do not give a large percentage of your profits to a charity for this to be a good marketing strategy.

TIP! Sell your products by motivating your customers in a positive way. Let customers know which of their problems your product will solve, and how it will solve them.

It is always best to handle customer complaints personally. Outsourcing your customer service might seem to be a good solution, but the resolutions offered by these companies can often seem impersonal and may infuriate an already angry customer even more. If an unhappy customer sends you an irate email, respond yourself to that email, offer a resolution, and let the customer know that you value him or her and his or her business.

Don?t be afraid to get started. You can learn from your experience as you go along. Use this advice to reach your ultimate goal.

Rubio: ?Address this reality?

Abcnews

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, whose parents were Cuban immigrants, has put forward a plan?which would create a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in stages, increase visas for seasonal farm workers and allow more high-skilled immigrants.?

?In an ideal world we wouldn?t have eight, 10 million people who are undocumented,? he said. ?We have to address this reality. But we have to do it in a way that?s responsible.?

McCain: ?Comprehensive reform is the way to go?

Politico

Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona, who pressed for immigration reform in his 2008 campaign, is part of a bipartisan ?gang of eight? senators working on a comprehensive immigration bill.

?I?ve always felt that comprehensive reform is the way to go, and I think I was right,? he said.

Flake: ?Our position ? was wrong?

Ap

McCain?s fellow Arizona Republican, Sen. Jeff Flake, also is working on the ?gang of eight? proposal, arguing that the Republican Party has been wrong on the issue in both tone and policy.

?On some issues, it?s not just the way we talk about it, it?s our position,? he said. ?On immigration reform, it?s been our position that was wrong. Not just the tone of the debate.?

Graham: ?An American solution?

Politico

Another Republican member of the ?gang of eight,? South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham called for immigration reform immediately after Obama?s re-election, saying the Republican Party needs to rebuild its relationship with Latinos.

?I intend to tear this wall down and pass an immigration reform bill that?s an American solution to an American problem. But we have nobody to blame but ourselves when it comes to losing Hispanics. And we can get them back with some effort on our part.?

Lee: ?Find common ground?

Politico

Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah is the only member of the ?gang of eight? who never has supported a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, but he told the Salt Lake Tribune he wants to be part of the solution.

?I?m not interested in anything that offers amnesty and I?ve made no secret about that,? he said. ?But there, I think, is potential to find common ground.?

Barrasso: ?We need to deal with immigration?

Politico

In an interview on CNN?s ?State of the Union,? Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming backed some immigration changes, such as allowing more high-skilled immigrants, though he did not say what he thought of a path to citizenship.

?You know, we are educating so many people and then telling them to leave the country who are from other countries,? he said. ?You know, go back, we don?t want you here. ? We need additional labor. We need to deal with immigration.?

Cruz: ?Enforce the laws?

Go

?My view is that we should enforce the laws with respect to those who are here illegally now,? he said. ?And if we secure the border and if we improve legal immigration, if we improve legal immigration, if we speed it up, if we make it more efficient, if we stop the interminable delays, that will solve much of the problem by providing an open, legal avenue for people to come in without violating the law.?

Soccer violence verdict sparks deadly riots in Egypt

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 32 people were killed on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, violence that compounds a political crisis facing Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Armored vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said, where gunshots rang out and protesters burned tires in anger that people from their city had been blamed for the deaths of 74 people at a match last year.

The rioting in Port Said, one of the most deadly spasms of violence since Hosni Mubarak's ouster two years ago, followed a day of anti-Mursi demonstrations on Friday, when nine people were killed. The toll over the past two days stands at 41.

The flare-ups make it even tougher for Mursi, who drew fire last year for expanding his powers and pushing through an Islamist-tinged constitution, to fix the creaking economy and cool tempers enough to ensure a smooth parliamentary election.

That vote is expected in the next few months and is meant to cement a democratic transition that has been blighted from the outset by political rows and street clashes.

The National Defense Council, which is led by Mursi and includes the defense minister who commands the army, called for "a broad national dialogue that would be attended by independent national characters" to discuss political differences and ensure a "fair and transparent" parliamentary poll.

The National Salvation Front of liberal-minded groups and other Mursi opponents cautiously welcomed the call.

THREATS OF VIOLENCE

Clashes in Port Said erupted after a judge sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in the deaths at the soccer match on February 1, 2012. Many were fans of the visiting team, Cairo's Al Ahly.

Al Ahly fans had threatened violence if the court had not meted out the death penalty. They cheered outside their Cairo club when the verdict was announced. But in Port Said, residents were furious that people from their city were held responsible.

Protesters ran wildly through the streets of the Mediterranean port, lighting tires in the street and storming two police stations, witnesses said. Gunshots were reported near the prison where most of the defendants were being held.

A security source in Port Said said 32 people were killed there, many dying from gunshot wounds. He said 312 were wounded and the ministry of defense had allocated a military plane to transfer the injured to military hospitals.

Inside the court in Cairo, families of victims danced, applauded and some broke down in tears of joy when they heard Judge Sobhy Abdel Maguid declare that the 21 men would be "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote execution, as all death sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

There were 73 defendants on trial. Those not sentenced on Saturday would face a verdict on March 9, the judge said.

At the Port Said soccer stadium a year ago, many spectators were crushed and witnesses saw some thrown off balconies after the match between Al Ahly and local team al-Masri. Al Ahly fans accused the police of being complicit in the deaths.

Among those killed on Saturday were a former player for al-Masri and a soccer player in another Port Said team, the website of the state broadcaster reported.

TEARGAS FIRED

On Friday, protesters angry at Mursi's rule had taken to the streets for the second anniversary of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and brought Mubarak down 18 days later.

Police fired teargas and protesters hurled stones and petrol bombs. Nine people were killed, mainly in the port city of Suez, and hundreds more were injured across the nation.

Reflecting international concern at the two days of clashes, British Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt said: "This cannot help the process of dialogue which we encourage as vital for Egypt today, and we must condemn the violence in the strongest terms."

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton urged the Egyptian authorities to restore calm and order and called on all sides to show restraint, her spokesperson said.

On Saturday, some protesters again clashed and scuffled with police in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities. In the capital, youths pelted police lines with rocks near Tahrir Square.

In Suez, police fired teargas when protesters angry at Friday's deaths hurled petrol bombs and stormed a police post and other governmental buildings including the agriculture and social solidarity units.

Around 18 prisoners in Suez police stations managed to escape during the violence, a security source there said, and some 30 police weapons were stolen.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 anti-Mubarak revolt.

Mursi's opponents say he has failed to deliver on economic pledges or to be a president representing the full political and communal diversity of Egyptians, as he promised.

"Egypt will not regain its balance except by a political solution that is transparent and credible, by a government of national salvation to restore order and heal the economy and with a constitution for all Egyptians," prominent opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on Twitter.

The opposition National Salvation Front, responding to the Defense Council's call for dialogue, said there must be a clear agenda and guarantees that any deal would be implemented, spokesman Khaled Dawoud told Reuters.

The Front earlier on Saturday threatened an election boycott and to call for more protests on Friday if demands were not met. Its demands included picking a national unity government to restore order and holding an early presidential poll.

Mursi's supporters say the opposition does not respect the democracy that has given Egypt its first freely elected leader.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Mursi to office, said in a statement that "corrupt people" and media who were biased against the president had stirred up fury on the streets.

The frequent violence and political schism between Islamists and secular Egyptians have hurt Mursi's efforts to revive an economy in crisis as investors and tourists have stayed away, taking a heavy toll on Egypt's currency.

'Nanotubes on a chip' may simplify optical power measurements

Jan. 25, 2013 ? The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has demonstrated a novel chip-scale instrument made of carbon nanotubes that may simplify absolute measurements of laser power, especially the light signals transmitted by optical fibers in telecommunications networks.

The prototype device, a miniature version of an instrument called a cryogenic radiometer, is a silicon chip topped with circular mats of carbon nanotubes standing on end. The mini-radiometer builds on NIST's previous work using nanotubes, the world's darkest known substance, to make an ultraefficient, highly accurate optical power detector, and advances NIST's ability to measure laser power delivered through fiber for calibration customers.

"This is our play for leadership in laser power measurements," project leader John Lehman says. "This is arguably the coolest thing we've done with carbon nanotubes. They're not just black, but they also have the temperature properties needed to make components like electrical heaters truly multifunctional."

NIST and other national metrology institutes around the world measure laser power by tracing it to fundamental electrical units. Radiometers absorb energy from light and convert it to heat. Then the electrical power needed to cause the same temperature increase is measured. NIST researchers found that the mini-radiometer accurately measures both laser power (brought to it by an optical fiber) and the equivalent electrical power within the limitations of the imperfect experimental setup. The tests were performed at a temperature of 3.9 K, using light at the telecom wavelength of 1550 nanometers.

The tiny circular forests of tall, thin nanotubes called VANTAs ("vertically aligned nanotube arrays") have several desirable properties. Most importantly, they uniformly absorb light over a broad range of wavelengths and their electrical resistance depends on temperature. The versatile nanotubes perform three different functions in the radiometer. One VANTA mat serves as both a light absorber and an electrical heater, and a second VANTA mat serves as a thermistor (a component whose electrical resistance varies with temperature). The VANTA mats are grown on the micro-machined silicon chip, an instrument design that is easy to modify and duplicate. In this application, the individual nanotubes are about 10 nanometers in diameter and 150 micrometers long.

By contrast, ordinary cryogenic radiometers use more types of materials and are more difficult to make. They are typically hand assembled using a cavity painted with carbon as the light absorber, an electrical wire as the heater, and a semiconductor as the thermistor. Furthermore, these instruments need to be modeled and characterized extensively to adjust their sensitivity, whereas the equivalent capability in NIST's mini-radiometer is easily patterned in the silicon.

NIST plans to apply for a patent on the chip-scale radiometer. Simple changes such as improved temperature stability are expected to greatly improve device performance. Future research may also address extending the laser power range into the far infrared, and integration of the radiometer into a potential multipurpose "NIST on a chip" device.

Obama's Climate Vow Could Make EPA a Political Target

President Obama?s?second Inaugural Address?left no doubt about his desire to put climate change front and center in his second term. He?s likely to pursue his agenda through executive actions rather than legislation, at least initially.

That could put the Environmental Protection Agency at the center of a political battle, as Senate Republicans use the process of confirming a new head of the agency as a chance to weigh in on or even block what they see as regulatory overreach by the administration in pursuit of climate-change goals.

Republicans have bristled in the last four years at regulations coming out of Obama's EPA--Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota wanted to shut the agency altogether. Administrator Lisa Jackson was a particular target, criticized for her implementation of Clean Air Act regulations and, more recently, for conducting official business using an email alias.?

As Obama's second term begins, EPA might become an even bigger target as Republicans brace for the likelihood that Obama will use the agency's powers to pursue his climate agenda. Environmental groups have urged the administration to use EPA's authority under the Clean Air Act to limit the carbon emissions power plants are allowed to produce and to implement stricter standards on leaks of methane, a greenhouse gas, both of which can be achieved without any further congressional approval.

Although EPA is the prime symbol of the Obama administration?s climate-change agenda, other agencies will also play a role?agencies that are expected to face confirmation fights in the coming months. The Energy Department, for example, can adopt new efficiency standards for home appliances. The State Department will rule on a permit for part of the Keystone XL pipeline that would cross into Canada. Each of those agencies is?likely to face or already in the process of confirming a new director, and questions over their views on climate could be part of the confirmation hearings. At EPA, Jackson announced she was stepping down last month, and the administration has yet to nominate a replacement.

Congress isn?t expected to take up climate legislation any time soon. It will be preoccupied in coming months by a series of looming budget fights, gun-control legislation, and immigration reform. A sweeping cap-and-trade bill that Obama had pushed in his first term never made it through Congress. This time, Senate Democrats?have indicated?they are ready to let the EPA run the show.

So get ready for a show.?

Melinda Pierce, deputy director for national campaigns at the Sierra Club, said the hearing to replace Jackson at EPA might be "doubly contentious" if the agency is perceived as a key stakeholder in moving Obama's climate agenda forward.?

The focus on climate in Monday's inaugural speech surprised?and pleased?environmental groups. But it could also set up a tougher hearing, said Andrew Wheeler, a former Republican staff director and chief counsel for the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

?During the campaign, President Obama tried to appeal to the coal states. He never once mentioned climate change. He tried at one point to even go to the right of Mitt Romney on coal issues. He didn?t mention climate change until the night of the election after he won. In his acceptance speech, he mentioned climate change and then he mentioned it again this week.... I think that?s going to generate a lot of questions and concerns from members, not just Republicans, but also moderate Democrats,? Wheeler said.?Especially vulnerable are the six Democratic senators from red states who will face tough reelection battles in 2014.

What?s more, Wheeler said, now that Obama is in his second term, there won?t be the typical deference given to a new president?s Cabinet selections.

Confirmation hearings are a good place for the minority to be heard on administration goals. ?You?ll get good press out of it and, quite frankly, you might not have the administrator come back up to the Hill until the following year,? said David Banks, a former deputy staff director for Republicans on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.

But even if the EPA confirmation fight is nasty, it probably would not deter Obama from implementing his second-term climate agenda. Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA has a legal duty to issue regulations limiting power-plant carbon emissions, said Conrad Schneider, advocacy director at the Clean Air Task Force, which recently sent an open letter to Obama outlining its recommendations for addressing climate change over the next four years. CATF also believes that the EPA failed to do its duty with respect to regulating emissions of methane from the oil and gas industry during Obama?s first term. ?Since those are statutory duties, it really doesn?t matter who is at the head of the agency. Those duties exist if the nominee is confirmed quickly and those duties exist if the nominee?s confirmation process drags out,? he said.

So consider the confirmation hearings a preview of the bigger fight on climate change in Congress over the next four years. Republicans may try to block the new regulations. Obama may try to get another climate bill through Congress. Legislation, environmental groups say, is the best way for Obama to secure the climate-change legacy he wants in the long run.

Homeschooling RequirementsTaking into consideration the compensation that homeschooling offers, a lot of parents are looking send on to it as a suitable selection for educating their brood. Preparatory a home-made train is no uncertainty a challenging chore for the reason that you could do with to supply your rib each and every one individuals services that are fondly set cheery in a freely available train. You moreover could do with to abide by the laws implemented for homeschooling and the criterion of your learning ought to be in par with the official chain schools.

Parents permanently aspire to supply the unsurpassed capital to their kids, so that they suit fondly authorized. While, the belief of educating your kids exclusively beneath your protection is horrendous, homeschooling entails a proportion of responsibilities. At the outset, you requirement be mentally organized to deduct cheery this challenge and then proceed slowly to kind it a star. We shall account for you the a good number of great consequence homeschooling rations in excess of at this time.

1. Contract the Laws

You ought to be fondly experienced of the laws obligatory by the Official a propos homeschooling. In selected states, the laws are incredibly stringent and next the policy enforced by the lawful federation is mandatory. The laws be valid to the reasoning of training, the attendance of your kids, qualification of parents, the subjects being skilled, conducting exams and twelve-monthly news. Along these lines, you could do with to consult a lawful advisory federation in the past locale cheery a homeschooling. On the obstinate, in selected states nearby are no policy at each and every one for establishing a home-made train.

2. Qualification of Parents

You ought to be fondly authorized to educate your brood. The itinerary and program ought to be in conjunction with that followed by normal schools. You ought to moreover be accustomed with the training methodologies. The chore becomes hard as your son grows and reaches a upper grade. You could do with to upgrade your training abilities constantly so that your brood do not be in front of slightly stumbling block. Having a fjord learning in all branch of learning is not in your ambit. Along these lines, you tin can hire teachers (remunerated or voluntary) for the drive of training your kids the subjects in which you do not have a great deal enfold. You ought to offer as much as necessary phase to your kids to kind the training sessions of use. And bear in mind, that drawn teachers could do with to do a proportion of grounding to meet the expectations of their students.

3. Requisitions for the Train

You desire beyond doubt aspire your rib to prevail on each and every one the privileges that a normal train provides. This chore is simply accomplished when your rib is in sink grades. Goods textbooks according to the program unquestionable by you. Moreover supply them notebooks, pencils, pens and new resources that are de rigueur period studying. The train ought to be equipped with computers, laptops and Internet association, as they have suit obligatory at the moment. These are selected critical clothes that a home-made train requirement have. You tin can moreover set cheery plasma screens, boards and a files. Constructing a lab indoors the train ought to be ready beneath the guidance of a lab instructor who is fondly skilled with the interior frame and security guidelines of a lab.

New 2-D material for next generation high-speed electronics

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Scientists at CSIRO and RMIT University have produced a new two-dimensional material that could revolutionise the electronics market, making "nano" more than just a marketing term.

The material -- made up of layers of crystal known as molybdenum oxides -- has unique properties that encourage the free flow of electrons at ultra-high speeds.

In a paper published in the January issue of materials science journal Advanced Materials, the researchers explain how they adapted a revolutionary material known as graphene to create a new conductive nano-material.

Graphene was created in 2004 by scientists in the UK and won its inventors a Nobel Prize in 2010. While graphene supports high speed electrons, its physical properties prevent it from being used for high-speed electronics.

The CSIRO's Dr Serge Zhuiykov said the new nano-material was made up of layered sheets -- similar to graphite layers that make up a pencil's core.

"Within these layers, electrons are able to zip through at high speeds with minimal scattering," Dr Zhuiykov said.

"The importance of our breakthrough is how quickly and fluently electrons -- which conduct electricity -- are able to flow through the new material."

RMIT's Professor Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh said the researchers were able to remove "road blocks" that could obstruct the electrons, an essential step for the development of high-speed electronics.

"Instead of scattering when they hit road blocks, as they would in conventional materials, they can simply pass through this new material and get through the structure faster," Professor Kalantar-zadeh said.

"Quite simply, if electrons can pass through a structure quicker, we can build devices that are smaller and transfer data at much higher speeds.

"While more work needs to be done before we can develop actual gadgets using this new 2D nano-material, this breakthrough lays the foundation for a new electronics revolution and we look forward to exploring its potential."

In the paper titled 'Enhanced Charge Carrier Mobility in Two-Dimensional High Dielectric Molybdenum Oxide,' the researchers describe how they used a process known as "exfoliation" to create layers of the material ~11 nm thick.

The material was manipulated to convert it into a semiconductor and nanoscale transistors were then created using molybdenum oxide.

The result was electron mobility values of >1,100 cm2/Vs -- exceeding the current industry standard for low dimensional silicon.

The work, with RMIT doctoral researcher Sivacarendran Balendhran as the lead author, was supported by the CSIRO Sensors and Sensor Networks Transformational Capability Platform and the CSIRO Materials Science and Engineering Division.

It was also a result of collaboration between researchers from Monash University, University of California -- Los Angeles (UCLA), CSIRO, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and RMIT.

Donald Trump Is Trying To Buy The New York Times - Business ...

Try not to laugh, but Donald Trump is exploring how he could buy the New York Times, Joe Hagan at New York Magazine reports:

According to sources familiar with the situation, Trump has engaged in more than one meeting to discuss how he might buy the Grey Lady. Details of Trump?s strategy remain scant.

Hagan notes that it's highly unlikely the Sulzberger family, which controls the New York Times would ever sell to Trump.

Trump has some sense of timing! A few years ago the Times was really getting knocked around. If he was serious about mounting a bid, that was the time to do it. Today, the Times, while not perfect, is in much better shape.

We have no idea how serious Trump is about his interest in the New York Times. For his sake, we hope it's not too serious. Because it will be a very expensive endeavor that goes nowhere.

Netanyahu tops Israel vote despite losses: exit polls

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emerged the bruised winner of Israel's election on Tuesday, with his hawkish bloc unexpectedly losing ground to resurgent center-left challengers, exit polls showed.

They suggested the Israeli leader's Likud party, yoked with the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beitenu group, would still be the biggest bloc in the 120-member assembly with 31 of the 120 seats, 11 fewer than the 42 they had in the previous parliament.

If the exit polls compiled by three Israeli television channels prove correct, Netanyahu would be on course to secure a third term in office, perhaps leading a hardline coalition that would promote Jewish settlement on occupied land.

But his weakened showing in an election he himself called earlier than necessary could complicate the struggle to forge an alliance with a stable majority in parliament.

The projections showed right-wing parties with a combined strength of 61-62 seats against 58-59 for the center-left.

The 63-year-old Israeli leader promised during his election campaign to focus on tackling Iran's nuclear ambitions if he won, shunting Palestinian peacemaking well down the agenda despite Western concern to keep the quest for a solution alive.

After a lackluster campaign, Israelis voted in droves on a sunny winter day, registering the highest projected turnout since 1999 when Netanyahu, serving his first term as prime minister, was defeated by then-Labour Party leader Ehud Barak.

The strong turnout buoyed center-left parties which had pinned their hopes on energizing an army of undecided voters against Netanyahu and his nationalist-religious allies.

The centrist Yesh Atid (There is a Future) party, led by former television talk show host Yair Lapid, came second with 18 or 19 seats, exit polls showed - a stunning result for a fledgling newcomer to Israeli politics.

Lapid won support amongst middle-class, secular voters by promising to resolve a growing housing shortage, abolish military draft exemptions for Jewish seminary students and seek an overhaul of the failing education system.

The once dominant Labour party led by Shelly Yachimovich was projected to take third place with 17 seats.

A stream of opinion polls before the election had predicted an easy win for Netanyahu. The final opinion polls on Friday showed his Likud-Beitenu group still on top, but losing some ground to the Jewish Home party, which opposes a Palestinian state and advocates annexing chunks of the occupied West Bank.

Jewish Home was projected to take 12 seats.

COALITION BUILDING

Full election results are due by Wednesday morning and official ones will be announced on January 30. After that, President Shimon Peres is likely to ask Netanyahu, as leader of the biggest bloc in parliament, to try to form a government.

The former commando has traditionally looked to religious, conservative parties for backing and is widely expected to seek out self-made millionaire Naftali Bennett, who heads the Jewish Home party and stole much of the limelight during the campaign.

Political sources said before the election that Netanyahu might approach center-left parties in an effort to broaden his coalition and present a more moderate face to worried allies.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague warned Israel on Tuesday it was losing international support, saying prospects for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were almost dead because of expanding Jewish settlements.

U.S.-brokered peace talks broke down in 2010 amid mutual acrimony. Since then Israel has accelerated construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem - land the Palestinians want for their future state - much to the anger of Western partners.

Tuesday's vote is the first in Israel since Arab uprisings swept the region two years ago, reshaping the Middle East.

Netanyahu has said the turbulence, which has brought Islamist governments to power in several countries long ruled by secularist autocrats, including neighboring Egypt, shows the importance of strengthening national security.

He views Iran's nuclear program as a mortal threat to the Jewish state and has vowed not to let Tehran enrich enough uranium to make a single nuclear bomb - a threshold Israeli experts say could arrive as early as mid-2013.

Iran denies it is planning to build the bomb, and says Israel, widely believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East, is the biggest threat to the region.

The issue barely registered during the election campaign, with a poll in Haaretz newspaper on Friday saying 47 percent of Israelis thought social and economic issues were the most pressing concern, against just 10 percent who cited Iran.

One of the first problems to face the next government, which is unlikely to take power before the middle of next month at the earliest, is the stuttering economy.

Data last week showed the budget deficit rose to 4.2 percent of gross domestic product in 2012, double the original estimate, meaning spending cuts and tax hikes look certain.

Light shed on complexity of gene therapy for congenital blindness

Jan. 21, 2013 ? Independent clinical trials, including one conducted at the Scheie Eye Institute at the Perelman School of Medicine, have reported safety and efficacy for Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), a congenital form of blindness caused by mutations in a gene (RPE65) required for recycling vitamin A in the retina. Inherited retinal degenerative diseases were previously considered untreatable and incurable. There were early improvements in vision observed in the trials, but a key question about the long-term efficacy of gene therapy for curing the retinal degeneration in LCA has remained unanswered.

Now, new research from the Scheie Eye Institute, published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, finds that gene therapy for LCA shows enduring improvement in vision but also advancing degeneration of affected retinal cells, both in LCA patients and animal models of the same condition.

LCA disease from RPE65 mutations has two-components: a biochemical blockade leading to impaired vision, and a progressive loss of the light-sensing photoreceptor cells throughout life of the affected patient. The authors of the new study explain that until now gene therapy has been optimistically assumed, but not proven, to solve both disease components at the same time.

"We all hoped that the gene injections cured both components -- re-establishing the cycle of vision and also preventing further loss of cells to the second disease component" said Artur V. Cideciyan, PhD, lead author and co-investigator of an LCA clinical trial at Penn.

Yet, when the otherwise invisible cell layers of the retina were measured by optical imaging in clinical trial participants serially over many years, the rate of cell loss was the same in treated and untreated regions. "In other words, gene therapy improved vision but did not slow or halt the progression of cell loss," commented Cideciyan.

"These unexpected observations should help to advance the current treatment by making it better and longer lasting," commented co-author Samuel G. Jacobson, MD, PhD, principal investigator of the clinical trial. "Slowing cell loss in different retinal degenerations has been a major research direction long before the current gene therapy trials. Now, the two directions must converge to ensure the longevity of the beneficial visual effects in this form of LCA."

In a continuation of the longstanding collaboration between the Scheie investigators and the Section of Ophthalmology at Penn School of Veterinary Medicine headed by co-authors Gustavo D. Aguirre, VMD, PhD, and William A. Beltran, DVM, PhD, studies were performed to test whether the clinical results were also present in the canine model of this LCA at disease stages equivalent to those in human patients.

"Our gene treatment in this canine model provided the groundwork for the clinical trials of patients, and now we added data to confirm the fact that retinal degeneration does continue despite improved vision" said Aguirre. "The next step is to perform the relevant experiments to ask what intervention will stop the degeneration if added to the gene therapy."

"These new findings contribute to greater clarity in understanding the natural history and complexity of the RPE65 form of LCA and provide a firm foundation for future investigations," said Joan M. O'Brien MD, professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and director of the Scheie Eye Institute.

Co-authors, in addition to the Penn researchers include, William W. Hauswirth, PhD, professor of Ophthalmology, at the University of Florida, Gainesville.

The current patient studies and the experimental studies were supported by the National Eye Institute (NEI) grants U10 EY017280, EY 06855, 017549, 019304, and 022012, the Macula Vision Research Foundation, and the Foundation Fighting Blindness.

Jung Seeds & Plants Home Gardening Catalog Recommendation

Jung Seeds & Plants, based in Randolph, Wis., is a is a family-owned business that has offered gardeners quality products since 1907.

The annual Jung Seeds & Plants home gardening catalog is one I always look forward to reading.

This catalog features, vegetables and flowers, seeds and bulbs, fruit and all kinds of gardening supplies. It is loaded with great gardening gear from cover to cover.

It?s also entertaining to read all of the descriptions. I?d love to meet whoever wrote the description for the ?Super Freak Hybrid? pumpkins or the ?Red Warty Thing? winter squash.

Every page is loaded with clever narratives about the company?s vast amount of offerings.

Family owned and operated for 106 years, Jung?s searches for the kinds of seeds and plants that gardeners like to grow.

There are plenty of old favorites, Jung Exclusives, Jung Top Picks and new introductions, too.

The expanded catalog includes a good selection of grafted tomatoes, peppers and even eggplant. The benefit of planting a grafted vegetable, is a hardier plant that resists soil-borne diseases. These plants grow root systems that allow for better uptake of water and nutrients so plants can produce more fruit.

Some of the new flowers for this season include the ?Jams ?N Jellies? hybrid vinca series with color names like Blackberry and the American Pie mix. Delish!

I?m also attracted to the ?Big Kiss? gazanias that are super-sized with striped petals.

There?s a nice selection of roses, too.

Why grow an ordinary watermelon when you can select a short-season ?Sugar Baby?? These personal size watermelons mature in 70-80 days, which would make them a good selection for our area. ?Yellow Doll? hybrid is another early watermelon (65) days that has bright yellow flesh that?s sweet. This watermelon is also a good selection for small-space gardens because it can grow vertically on a trellis.

But despite the unusual varieties, witty vegetable names and funny descriptions, this company is all business. Among the specialty varieties are traditional fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, vines, trees, and shrubs. Pawpaw trees share the catalog?s pages with strawberries, raspberries and gooseberries. There are also plenty of peppers, tons of tomatoes and reams of radishes.

Jung?s also offers a good selection of growing accessories, seed starting supplies, fertilizers, and insect, pest, and disease controls.

Gardeners can shop Jung?s online store, the online catalog or request a printed catalog.

It Hurts To See These 127 iPhones Crushed By a Bulldozer, Even Though They're Fakes

Counterfeit goods that get found out often get destroyed. That should come as no surprise. But that doesn't mean it's easy to watch, especially if the fakes are convincing. Take this Russian crush-fest, for example, where a bulldozer demolished 127 iPhones found to be cheap imitations masquerading as the real thing. At least let's hope they weren't real. Either way, they look close enough that watching them be crushed into wreckage is still kind of rough, but at the same time you can't look away. [Bit Rebels] More »
