How Can I Build a Doll House?

Building a doll house from a woodworking blueprint plan can be exciting and at times maybe a little frustrating because of having to cut out all the pieces and put it together. However, if you follow some of these tips it will make the whole process easier.

There are some things you need to ask yourself before you begin to build your doll house. Do you have a space in your home or a workshop where you can work on your project and it will not be disturbed during the entire project? How much time do you have to devote to this woodworking project? What is your level of expertise? What type of plans will you use for your level of experience? Once you?ve tackled these questions and are ready to begin you?ll need to know the following.

What type of wood will you use? Two common choices are MDF and plywood. Of course there are more expensive types of wood but if you are just starting out these would be your best choices. MDF is a type of hardboard, which is made from wood fibers glued under heat and pressure. MDF can be dangerous to use if the correct safety precautions are not taken. MDF contains a substance called urea formaldehyde, which may be released from the material through cutting and sanding. Masks and goggles should always be worn at all times. However, it is easier to work with because it is easy to cut and it doesn?t splinter. However, MDF is thick and could alter your measurements so you need to allow for the difference in thickness when measuring.

Plywood is easy to work with and it comes in large sheets. However, plywood does splinter so you will want to take this into consideration. You could need only one piece of 4 foot by 8 foot plywood for the complete outside of the house.

Once you?ve decided on what type of wood to use, be sure to assemble all the tools you will need. Here?s some of the tools you?ll need: an all-purpose saw; needle-nose pliers; light weight hammer; small hacksaw; small plane; cross-headed screwdrivers; wood glue; craft saw; craft knife and lots of spare blades; sharp scissors; ruler; pencils; and a set of different sandpaper grades.

Be sure and read all the instructions before you begin. Lay out the instructions so you can refer to them. Don?t forget to take progress pictures. When you complete your doll house you can have the pictures to show how you progressed to the end of your project.

Remember doll houses are built by two standard scales ? either the 1/12th scale or the 1/24th scale. The 1/12th scale is 12 times smaller than real size and it?s the easiest and most popular scale. To find out more information on how to build a doll house Go Here NOW!

Senate canceling July 4 recess next week (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? The Senate will cancel its planned July 4 recess next week and remain in session beginning Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said.

In making the announcement Thursday on the floor of the Senate, Reid noted the need for Congress to pass legislation raising borrowing authority. But he did not say that such a bill would be ready for the Senate to debate next week.

Instead, Reid, a Democrat, said Republicans were "willing to risk our economy" by standing in the way of a debt limit increase if a related deficit-reduction measure included any revenue increases.

A recent debate by Rviz Elias and Emelina Prier of the UK sports ...

After a brief intermission, moderator Sahm Ridderhoff returned to the podium with introductory remarks for the second session. Mushero Maranan described the next debate as one centered on UK sports betting marketing ethics in the short-term and long term. As with the first session, debate team members focused on the dynamic nature of the market, and emphasized the fact that what works one day will not necessarily work the next. The UK sports betting debate was considered a success and portions were televised on local news channels the next day. Response was positive and most people left the auditorium with a better impression of how things work in the UK sports betting industry, and we impressed with the candor and openness of major corporate executives. After the UK sports betting topic introductions, associate moderator Stieg Drane briefly paused for questions from the news media, who lined up at a centrally located microphone in the auditorium. Most members of the media were curious about recent news items, although a few bashed members of the Boerboom Dansbury UK sports betting marketing and advertising firm, who were alledgely involved in multi-level marketing schemes. An interesting questions regarding UK sports betting financial reporting and auditing was offered by Waisner Doughtry, the moderator of the second session: ?Do you, as business leaders and executives, make sure that your books are 100% accurate and sound, or do you leave this task to your respective accounting agencies?? Obviously, all the executives replied that they personally sign-off on any financial reporting, especially in light of new UK sports betting accounting legislation, but some were frank and stated that they allow their finance teams a lot of latitude. ?I see to it that all our data is accurate,? stated CEO Jill Seirer, ?but I trust our finance department to crunch the numbers correctly and report accurately. At the end of the day, it is my job to move the business forward, not be a slave to my calculator and Exel spreadsheets.? Moderator Venus Vanscoik opened the UK sports betting discussion with a brief introduction of the debate objectives and rules. Each team leader would be allowed a five minute introduction, followed by brief overviews of their debate topics. Other team members would have one minute to state their points of view in relation to the team leader?s overview. Debater Vanwinkle Valone also echoed these views regarding technology and marketing, exclaiming, ?Everyone in this UK sports betting sector knows how to blast out email, notices, fliers, etc. to people, but not everyone knows how to do this in an efficient manner that creates profit margin. Efficieny in our industry is absolutely key.? ?I truly believe that our customers, not regulatory agencies, are the best source of UK sports betting marketing feedback. Face it, if we?re not making money and our customers are pissed off, our marketing methods are wrong and not productive. Don?t forget that private companies are in the business to make cash, and don?t make a profit banging their heads against the walls,? revealed Mariko Ellebrecht, CMO of Sossong Smither and Vee Hoe INC. This assertion brought the audience to their feet, although a few sat quietly in anticipation of a rebuttal from opposition team member Ignacia Gruenes, a staunch believer in good ethics and standards. Overall, most members of the audience were impressed with the candid replies presented by the UK sports betting sector leaders. Stockard Najjar, an administrative assistant in the Voorheis Gibbons and Partners firm, stated, ?I really believe that my employers are genuine and care about what they do?They are not out to prey on people or report false numbers, they just want to make money and provide for the welfare of their company just like anyone else.? Pfaff Hsueh, debate team leader from the Sang Tichenor INC UK sports betting firm, opened with some frank remarks regarding predatory marketing practices in the industry. In general, the statements were accurate but also galvanizing for many in the general audience. It was widely known that the Sang Tichenor INC firm used aggressive marketing tactics, but never had it admitted it publicly before.

How Christian Books Can Help

Are you a wide reader? Do you love collecting books? Do you prefer fact or fiction? Or is it love stories that you love? Have you ever encountered a book that has changed your life and its course?

As a college student, I used to love collecting books, reading them during lunch break, or in times when I don't feel like listening to my professors. I remember saving all the money I have left from my allowance just to buy the next book I want to read. Buying Christian Books that can change my life has been a real investment for me.

Through reading my Christian Books, you'll be able to learn from other Christians that life is not perfect and that only God can give a perfect LOVE. You'll learnt that He can meet every need of each human being, for He loves them as He loves Jesus.

Christian books helps you to have an encounter with Christ. Through these books, you will be able to know God's desire, God's heart, what plans He has for you, and what great things He has in store for you.

As a Worship Leader in our church, I used to invest in Christian books those talks about leading a congregation through music. I read a lot about Darlene Zschech, and her journey with God. In her books, she imparts more on how God meets her, on how she was so thankful that God is the great lover of all and that He can make things right even when she feels that there's no way out from her situation.

God uses those writers to write about his love. He sends them gifts to write and talk about their love with God. God uses a lot of ways to touch us, to make us feel His presence. To communicate with us, He anointed singers to write His love songs and writers to write His love story.

Christian books are one of the most helpful tools in knowing God's heart. It helps us develop a deeper and more intimate relationship with God. For when we read, we find a place where we can have peace, alone in a room and have a one-on-one conversation with God. Wisdom is a gift from God. The more books you read, the more you'll know Him and the more closely you can get to Him.

There are different books you can find, books about His love as a Father, as a Friend, as a Mentor, as a Companion, as a Servant, as Lover, as a Brother, as a Colleague, the Best Buddy you can ever have.

Invest into books that can change your life, books that can make you closer our Creator, books that can teach you about His love and His passion on you. Spend into books that can help you become a better person, books that can impart wisdom and knowledge about life, love, on how to handle worlds demands. Have a good walk with God through reading Christian Books.

Windows 8: Microsoft?s Next OS is Shaping Up

Windows 8Microsoft, long known for its series of Windows desktops, recently showcased some of the functionally of its new Windows iteration, Windows 8. This new version of Windows has no hard release date but is targeted for a 2012 roll-out, and will be used on PCs, laptops and tablet PCs.

At the Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, Microsoft showed off some of the benefits of its new OS to those in attendance, the main one being a completely redesigned user interface that will be unfamiliar but hopefully intuitive to most users. Replacing the ?start menu? will be a ?start screen,? which will feature live application tiles, some of which include weather or store apps or RSS feeds. A traditional desktop option can also be chosen.

This new version of Windows is intended to maintain Microsoft?s tradition of non-hardware enhance UI?s, and is being designed to run with 16:9 resolution as its focus. The company claims that, thanks to better processor and memory use, the OS will run more smoothly than other versions and will have the same or lower system requirements as Windows 7.

There are also rumors about a Windows 8 tablet that might hit markets in 2013, but Microsoft has not yet confirmed this information. Sources claim that the company has been in talks with both Texas Instruments and OEMS about distributing a Microsoft-branded tablet, but developers aren?t so sure that this is the case. Other Microsoft hardware lines, save for the 360, have not seen a great deal of success, and there is concern that they might limit their market share by releasing a Microsoft-specific tablet.

Some tablet manufacturers have mentioned the ?restrictions? that Microsoft often places on developers that wish to use its platform, and wonder if the company might not follow a similar plan with Windows 8 as they did with Windows 7, which required that manufacturers follow a strict set of criteria in order to have the OS on their tablets.

Concerns also abound about whether or not a Windows 8 tablet or any system running the new OS will be subject to the ?curse? that has followed many of the even-numbered iterations of Windows such as Windows ME and Windows Vista. First impressions seem to indicate that the company is devoting much of its effort to increased performance and synced cloud applications, which will hopefully help sidestep any potential issues.

Arizona football preview with College Football Zealots

Photo

College football website?College Football Zealots?recently reached out to Arizona Desert Swarm to provide a local look at the Arizona Wildcats' upcoming 2011 football season. Sure, were a couple months from getting into the grind of the football season, but it's never too early to ask questions, evaluate the team from last year and pinpoint what can make the next year a successful one.

For the Wildcats, many questions loom after a wacky coaching changes, the loss of pretty much the entire offensive line and a number of?offseason injuries. Take a look at six big questions and my blogger-perspective attempt to answer them after the jump.

College Football Zealots: 1- Mike Stoops is going into his eighth year as Head Coach. He has taken the Wildcats to a bowl and posted a winning record for the last three years. From a coaching standpoint what do you think he needs to improve to get this team to the next level?

?

Arizona Desert Swarm: Not just preparation but consistent preparation at that. Through the first half of last season, the Wildcats were stomping out mediocre football teams pretty easily and jumped into the Top 10 after a 7-1 start. It was a fresh thing to see after the program had struggled by playing down to its competition in Stoops' previous years. But then came the brutal back-end of the schedule that made the Wildcats look silly. They dropped the last five games of 2010, ending the season with a 36-10 beatdown at the hands of Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl. Did the early success get to their heads? I don't know. But even at the Alamo Bowl, it wasn't a complete lack of talent that made the performance become the second embarrassing bowl appearance in a row -- it was unpreparedness.

?

Oh, and Stoops could probably learn to keep his cool during games. As much as you might say that football players need to get used to being yelled at, it doesn't help when a coach does so frequently that it begins to go in one ear and out the other. If he learns to have more poise, that will also help him make better decisions in close games.

CFZ: Arizona has had some significant injuries this off-season. What are the ones that will have the biggest impact on the team and what is the status of those players?

?

AZDS: All four of the big injuries were players within the rotations and all were torn ACLs. Back-up runningback Greg Nwoko, safety Adam Hall, linebacker Jake Fischer and defensive tackle Willie Mobley will all be out for a long while, most likely through the first few games. The biggest losses come on defense; Hall showed signs of being Arizona's only true play-maker in a defense that was solid but nothing special. He's an athletic freak and a player who can deliver a game-defining hit. Fischer's loss is big considering the linebacker corps are thin as is and Nwoko is the only one of the three backs expected to see time that is big enough for a goal line package.

CFZ: Arizona was in the middle of the pack in scoring last year in the Pac-10 but they have a lot of good returnees on the offensive side of the football (Foles, Criner, Antolin). Who needs to step up their game on offense to really make Arizona a legit Pac-12 Championship contender?

?

AZDS: Honestly, this is a combination of things. The receiving crew is deep and talented with Criner (a probable All-American and high NFL pick) leading the way, and Antolin will be solid should he remain healthy. But I think the biggest question mark is Foles, who as much hype as he's gotten, hasn't played well enough as he should considering the talent around him. The high number of three-and-outs last year might hint toward the coaching staff's distrust with the run game, but when Foles threw the ball, he either didn't make reads fast enough or didn't have the confidence to make plays downfield.

?

In addition, the offensive line is in complete rebuild mode after that whole graduation thing happened with a cohesive, veteran crew. Their growth in the offseason might be what makes or breaks Arizona's offense.

CFZ: Who are some newcomers (Freshman, RS Frosh, JUCO) that you think can come in and make an impact for the Wildcats this year?

?

AZDS: Though it's unlikely that any true freshmen will make a huge impact or crack a starting spot, there's a number of new faces for the Wildcats that could key their success in 2011. The most interesting is punter Kyle Dugandzic out of Ventura Community College, who apparently has a big leg -- he backed that up by booting a 70-plus yard punt in his only attempt during Arizona's spring game.

?

Also on the special teams from is redshirt freshman Garic Wharton, a small but blazing fast return man. He probably has a lock on the job for his ridiculous speed alone (he was one of the best sprinters in the nation at his Nevada high school). Wharton could also see time at an inside receiver position. And going back to the offensive line, redshirt freshmen Trent Spurgeon and Mickey Baucus are two youngsters that will be counted upon to protect Foles.

CFZ: Looking at the schedule, what are the most important games this year (and why)?

?

AZDS: After the gimme opener against Northern Arizona, the Wildcats face a daunting five-game stretch. The Pac-12 schedule will pit Arizona against arguably the four strongest programs from the old Pac-10. They play Stanford, Oregon, USC and Oregon State in a row, all without a bye week. If they play like they did toward the end of last season, they have no chance of gaining momentum until mid-October. But the biggest game is before that -- Arizona heads to Stillwater, Okla. on Sept. 8 to face the same Cowboys team that smacked them in the Alamo Bowl last year. If they don't at the very least make that game competitive, then they have no chance at finding the confidence that last year's tough last stretch stripped them of.

CFZ: What is your gut feeling on the final record for the 2011 season and what makes the season successful in your eyes?

?

AZDS: Because of the way the Wildcats ended last season and because five of their first six games are against teams that beat them last year (not to mention that they're all Top 25 potential squads), I see this team finishing with a mediocre 7-5 record. I think the Wildcats have too much rebuilding to do on the offensive line and too much coaching turnover from the past few years to take a major step forward. The offensive line coming together will make the offense able to stay with anyone, but that will be tough to do until Arizona has already lost a few games.

?

As for it being a successful season, Arizona must simply make a decent bowl game and then win it. That will keep Stoops' job safe and make next year a potentially very good season. Perhaps then the Wildcats will finally have some stability to make a run at the Pac-12 title. For next year's sake, it's imperative for this season to be a seven- or eight-win year.

?

What do you think should be considered a successful season for the Arizona football team?

Iraqi court sentences 15 to death for massacre (AP)

BAGHDAD ? An Iraqi court on Thursday sentenced 15 alleged al-Qaida members to death for their role in the 2006 wedding party massacre of 70 people, considered one of the most horrific attacks carried out by Sunni-led militants during the insurgency.

The defendants were convicted of planning and carrying out the attack in the mainly Shiite town of Dujail, Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council spokesman Abdul-Sattar Bayrkdar said.

Dujail is located 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Baghdad and is surrounded by Sunni areas that were under the control of al-Qaida operatives at that time.

Since the defendants' arrest last month, Iraqi state TV has been airing the defendants' confessions in what is seen as an attempt by embattled Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to show that he is protecting the country.

In videotaped confessions, the defendants said the motive behind the massacre was that the groom was Shiite and the bride was Sunni.

At a fake check point set up by insurgents disguised as Iraqi soldiers, the families were stopped, kidnapped and taken to a remote area where they were separated.

According to the confessions, the insurgents threw 15 screaming children into the Tigris River after hanging concrete blocks around their necks. Blindfolded men were lined on the river bank with their hands tied behind their backs and were shot dead execution-style.

Then the insurgents raped the women, including the bride, who had her chest slashed and was left to bleed to death in front of her husband.

In a statement issued after the verdict, al-Maliki thanked the court and described the insurgents as "violent criminals who shocked all Iraqis with their hideous crime."

A number of international human rights organizations have been questioning whether the proceedings of Iraqi courts comply with international standards for fairness.

Bayrkdar responded to those concerns. "The court completed today all its procedures properly," he told The Associated Press in a phone interview after the half-day trial. "It was open to the public, and the convicted had the chance to talk and enter their pleas."

The 15 have a month to appeal the death sentences.

Building A Prospect List For Your Internet Marketing Business ...

Building a prospect list for your Internet Marketing Business ? it?s not exactly a subject to be discussing when you are supposed to be on holiday with your wife in Spain relaxing. However, needs be, so after travelling along the beautiful Algarve where the Mediteranean meets the Atlantic Ocean, the most South West point of Europe, to a lovely town called Lagos we had a great day visiting Church friends who are working amongst the poor and homeless in that area of Portugal. Having digested a fantastic lunch with them in their home we then sauntered back along the A22 to the Spanish border when my wife reminded me that we needed to write a blog on building a prospect list for Internet Marketers ? ?You?re kidding?

So I?m now dictating, whilst my wife is typing a blog for those of you who are keen to start your own Internet Marketing Business.

First of all, if you want someone to give you their email address, their name and home address, it?s a bit cheeky to ask outright for these details, so you should really be giving them something in return for their efforts.

Giving them something in return encourages them to leave that detail. An up to date prospect list can be worth ?1,000?s to you; so enticing them to leave that info is key to your future success in selling them more product.

So how do you entice them, ? can I suggest just one example to begin with, being a ?Free Report.? It need not be more than 30 pages in a ?word document? but the information that you give should be a taster of the quality that you want to sell to them. It could be just part information about the actual product that you want them to buy ? if they don?t feel they are getting value for money, or the document is not neatly set out, there are spelling mistakes and quite honestly the information in the Free Report is naff then there is no way they will be tempted to buy from you. Remember everything we do online paints a picture in the mind of your prospect of what kind of person you are and what kind of business you run. Whatever you do in your ?Free Report? should express your professionalism in Internet Marketing. The Free Report should be set up as a PDF.

The best definition I have heard of, of a ?Free Repor?t is something that is useful but imcomplete, or it should tell them what to do but not how to do it. The full report that you want to sell them or your main product will tell them how it is done. Lastly, remember first impressions count and your Free Report needs to convey information with integrity ? this will build confidence in your prospect to buy your main product. You see if your Free Report doesn?t give that first good impression whatever you try and do after that is actually going to be kind of difficult, to win that customer over because that is going to be their first experience with you.

Report: UFC Targeting November for Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos

UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 121

UFC Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez at UFC 121

UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez could defend his belt as soon as Nov. 19 at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif. The L.A. Times on Thursday reported that UFC chairman Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed the company is targeting that date for Velasquez?s defense against Junior dos Santos.

MMAWeekly.com sources close to the situation confirmed that an October date was out for Velasquez?s return, but that he would be ready for a date in either November or December. That rules him out for the UFC 136 fight card on Oct. 8 in Houston, the date that most rumors had originally pointed to.

Velasquez (9-0) hasn?t fought since decimating former champion Brock Lesnar at UFC 121 in October. He suffered a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder in the fight. He had surgery to repair the injury, and reported has recovered well from the operation.

Number one contender Junior dos Santos (13-1) decided not to wait for Velasquez to heal, instead opting for a coaching stint on the thirteenth season of ?The Ultimate Fighter.? He was then going to fight fellow coach Brock Lesnar at UFC 131, but Lesnar had to back out due to another bout with diverticulitis.

The Brazilian instead fought late replacement Shane Carwin. He won a unanimous decision, putting dos Santos back into the title fight upon Valesquez?s return.

The Nov. 19 event would likely be dubbed UFC 138. Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre defends his belt against Nick Diaz at UFC 137 on Oct. 29 in Las Vegas.

England uproot Sri Lanka top order (AFP)

SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) ? Sri Lanka were reduced to 81 for four against England on a rain-marred first day of the third and final Test at the Rose Bowl here on Thursday.

Only 38 overs out of a scheduled 90 were possible on the opening day of what was the first Test ever staged at the home of southern county Hampshire.

But that was enough time for England, 1-0 up in this series, to rip through a top order lacking Sri Lanka captain Tillakaratne Dilshan, out with a broken thumb suffered while making 193 in the drawn second Test at Lord's.

By contrast stand-in skipper Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, the tourists' two most experienced batsmen, have yet to score a fifty this series and managed a mere six runs combined on Thursday.

James Anderson marked his comeback to England duty by taking two wickets, while the 6ft 7in Chris Tremlett, who troubled Sri Lanka with his pace and bounce, also struck twice on the ground where he made his name.

Anderson ended the day with a return of two for 24 runs in 16 overs while Tremlett, who until his move to Surrey last season played for Hampshire, had two for 17 in just 11.

Sri Lanka were in dire straits at 39 for four.

But Thilan Samaraweera (24 not out) and Prasanna Jayawardene (10 not out) prevented further collapse with an unbroken stand of 42.

"It was nice, I played here for a long time and it's been a couple of years since I've been back, so it was nice of the Hampshire fans to welcome me back," said Tremlett.

"I think as a whole we bowled pretty well. It was certainly an improvement on last week (at Lord's).

"It was impressive for Jimmy to come back in without any overs. The Twenty20 game he was going to play in got washed out but he hit his straps straightaway, so credit to him," Tremlett added.

Anderson, who missed Lord's with a side injury, was recalled in place of Steven Finn as England looked to build on a series lead secured by an innings and 14-run victory in the first Test in Cardiff.

England, after captain Andrew Strauss won the toss and fielded, saw Anderson strike in the 13th over.

Test debutant Lahiru Thirimanne, in for Dilshan, edged to Strauss at first slip and fell for 10.

Sri Lanka spent more than an hour on 23 for one because of a rain break.

But five balls after the resumption, that became 23 for two when opener Tharanga Paranavitana was lbw on the back foot to a full length swinging delivery from Tremlett.

Sangakkara is one of the world's leading batsmen, with an impressive Test average of more than 56 coming into this match.

But on Thursday he only made two before, trying to drive an Anderson delivery that cut away off the pitch, he was caught behind by Matt Prior.

It took Sangakkara's tally for the series to a meagre 65 runs at an average of 13.

Another lengthy rain break followed before, in late evening sunshine, Tremlett produced a lifting delivery that Mahela Jayawardene could only edge to wicketkeeper Prior to leave Sri Lanka 39 for four.

"Sangakkara will be pretty unhappy seeing the replay of the shot he played.

"Tharanga lost it half-way down the track; the debutant (Thirimanne) got a good ball, and Mahela got a beauty," said Sri Lanka batting coach Marvan Atapattu.

The former Test opener also offered an implied rebuke to Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene for arriving late on tour following stints in the Twenty20 Indian Premier League.

"People coming from 50-over and then 20-over versions doesn't really help... You're in a country where your technique is going to be tested.

"It doesn't happen overnight; you need some time. This is why players need to get to a place like England, play a few practice games, get runs and get into Test level."

Hole-in-Fun: "Golf Boys" Release First Music Video

Golf. It's generally regarded as a sport for social elites and uptight stiffs.

The PGA Tour is full of class guys, but charismatic, magnetic figures are hard to come by. Even pre-scandal Tiger Woods was kind of a slick, corporate drone.

This context makes the video below, starring a quartet of PGA stars - Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan, Ben Crane and Bubba Watson - all the more amazing.

Their faux boy band, "Golf Boys," offers an introspective look into a pro's mindset. Seriously, these are professional golfers. Four of America's best, no less:

UPDATE 1-Bank of Canada expects less housing market sizzle

Wed Jun 15, 2011 3:47pm EDT

* Gov. Carney anticipates housing market moderation

* Repeats monetary stimulus will eventually be withdrawn

* Says higher rates will curb housing demand

* Pockets of housing market severely unaffordable

By Nicole Mordant

VANCOUVER, June 15 (Reuters) - Canada's robust housing market should moderate as demand is eventually dampened by higher interest rates and other factors, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney said on Wednesday.

In a speech in Vancouver, the country's hottest housing market, Carney warned that Canadians are now as deeply indebted as the Americans and the British, and the proportion of households that are vulnerable to an adverse economic shock is at a nine-year high.

Policymakers will need to remain vigilant to possible financial imbalances, he said. But he gave no clear signal the bank was prepared to raise its benchmark interest rates any time soon to address housing prices that are now 13 percent above their pre-crisis peak.

"The bank manages policy for the economy as a whole, rather than any specific region or sector. In this context, what does the Bank of Canada expect for housing? In a word: moderation," Carney said in the text of his speech.

"While supply of new homes should remain relatively flexible, many of the supportive demand forces are now being played out," he said.

He repeated language in the bank's May 31 rate announcement that the current monetary policy stimulus -- with rates of 1 percent -- "will be eventually withdrawn".

Carney expects economic growth to slow to a modest pace in the short term on the temporary effects of the Japanese disaster and high energy prices, before speeding up again in the second half of the year, "consistent with a renewed narrowing of the output gap."

The eventual rate hikes will have a bigger impact on Canadian borrowers than in the past because of high debt levels, making homes unaffordable for more people.

Likewise, stricter mortgage lending rules imposed by the government will make it harder for buyers to use high debt levels to maintain demand for houses and pressure prices.

Carney also said a resurgence of mortgage borrowing in the first quarter may be temporary.

He suggested, however, that certain areas and segments of Canada's housing market were showing bubble-like characteristics, particularly Vancouver where the average home price is nearly 11 times the average household income.

"Given such developments, one cannot totally discount the possibility that some pockets of the Canadian housing market are taking on characteristics of financial asset markets, where expectations can dominate the underlying forces of supply and demand," he said.

Effective Test Management - Choosing a Test Management Tool

Testing and validating a software is an important part of software development. The test management process can be done with word processors or spreadsheets; however, as the world of software development expands, there is a growing need for a more effective testing process, as well as for integrative testing tools.

In order to understand why we need test management tools, we should first understand what makes a test management process valuable. An effective test management process allows teams to plan, develop, execute and assess the entire testing process. This end-to-end process, or the software testing life cycle, begins in the products' requirements, or the SDD (Software Design Description).

The requirements provide information about the system under test (SUT). Once you have defined your requirements, you can proceed to write tests and test steps, execute them, and report the issues detected in the process.

A good software testing tool will cover all these components - Requirements, Tests and issues, and will allow you to integrate between them. This way, your team members can track the entire process - for example, if a requirement is not yet complete, they will be able to see the specific issues that arose from that requirement, and the tests they were detected by.

Different companies work in different ways; each one has its own unique work methodology. This is why customization is also critical in a software testing tool. A user-friendly tool will be intuitive and easy to use, but it should also be highly customizable, so that it changes according to your needs and not vice versa.

A good software testing tool also allows you to disperse the workload wisely. By assigning tasks to different team members - developers, testers and administrators alike, you can manage your workload, reducing stress and increasing your team members' productivity.

Another important aspect of a test management tool is an efficient reporting system; this provides you with information about the current state of the system under test, it lets you see the big picture and recognize your weak spots. Graphic presentation of the current state is very helpful - it makes the relevant data pop out and makes it much easier to review.

Finally, a good test management tool will allow you to import and export your data, so that your previous work is not lost, and you can always switch to a new tool should the need arise.

See more tips on how to develop a good test management process, or see a complete overview of an end-to-end test management tool on practitest.com.

Deutsche Bank fire trial defense: blaze unforeseeable (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Three construction managers removing asbestos from the former Deutsche Bank building at ground zero in Manhattan could not have anticipated unusual circumstances that led to the deaths of two firefighters during a 2007 blaze, defense lawyers said on Tuesday.

Prosecutors at a 10-week old manslaughter trial have argued that Salvatore DePaola and two other supervisors -- Jeffrey Melofchik, the building site safety manager, and Mitchell Alvo, the toxin cleanup director -- knew that a crucial water standpipe was damaged but did nothing to fix it.

The former bank building was damaged and contaminated by the attacks of September 11, 2001, and was in the process of being dismantled in August 2007 when the powerful fire broke out on the 17th floor, drawing hundreds of firefighters to lower Manhattan in an effort to extinguish the flames.

Robert Beddia, 53, and Joseph Graffagnino, 33, died of smoke inhalation and carbon monoxide poisoning when they became trapped inside the skyscraper. More than 100 other firefighters sustained injuries in the blaze.

On Tuesday defense lawyers at state Supreme Court in Manhattan asked the jury to use "common sense," arguing that if government inspectors had repeatedly failed to identify a damaged water pipe in the basement it was unreasonable to expect construction supervisors with less expertise to recognize the potential danger.

The inspectors "didn't see any issue, and yet Sal, the abatement guy, should have seen an issue?" said Rick Pasacreta, the lawyer for the asbestos removal foreman DePaola.

The prosecution, which called 70 witnesses, has said the two firefighters could have survived had water been able to reach the upper floors, where black smoke became so thick that visibility dropped to zero.

But that condition, defense lawyers argued, was caused not by a lack of water but by a fan system that pulled smoke downward, leaving firefighters blind and disoriented.

The defense relied on cross-examination and a single expert witness to make its case.

"Water would not have helped in this case," said Edward Little of Hughes, Hubbard & Reed, the lawyer for Melofchik, adding that the fire represented a "horrible perfect storm."

Little repeated several times the distinction between civil negligence and criminal liability, which requires a higher standard of proof.

"The deaths of these two firefighters, Bob Beddia and Joe Graffagnino, were terrible, were tragic and were heartbreaking," he said. "But not every tragic accident has somebody who committed a crime behind it."

DePaola and Melofchik will have their verdict decided by the jury, which is expected to receive its instructions from Judge Rena Uviller on Thursday.

Alvo and the Galt Corp., the subcontractor that employed Alvo and DePaola and is also charged, chose to have Uviller rule on their cases, rather than the jury.

US Cellular Gets First Windows Phone 7 Device, HTC 7 Pro

  • June 13, 2011 05:38pm EST
HTC 7 Pro

Regional CDMA carrier US Cellular has announced that its first Windows Phone 7 device, the HTC 7 Pro, will hit stores on Tuesday, June 14.

Previously only Sprint offered the HTC 7 Pro, which it inexplicably rebranded as the HTC Arrive.

The HTC 7 Pro features a 1-GHz (first-generation) Snapdragon processor, 3.6-inch tilted touch screen, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a 5-megapixel camera. It also comes with a digital compass, GPS, and Xbox Live integration, along with popular Windows Phone 7 apps like Netflix and NBA Game Time (but no Angry Birds!).

For more, see PCMag's review of the HTC Arrive (Sprint), in which mobile analyst Sascha Segan said it was a well-built smartphone that unfortunately couldn't access Sprint's 4G network.

US Cellular recommends its Primary Plus Plan to complement the HTC 7 Pro. For $79.99 a month you'll get 5GB of data, unlimited text, picture, and video messaging, 450 voice minutes, free incoming calls, free nights and weekends, and free mobile-to-mobile calls.

Although US Cellular only covers in 26 states, it has won PCMag's Readers' Choice Award for carriers every year since 2007.

The HTC 7 Pro on US Cellular costs $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate and two-year contract.

Darrell Delamaide's Political Capital: GOP ?debate? focuses on economy

By Darrell Delamaide

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) ? What a joke! The so-called Republican presidential ?debate? put on by CNN Monday night turned into a sloganeering rally with very little substance.

A debate requires two opposing points of view, yet the seven Republican hopefuls on the stage, mindful that they must reach the lowest common denominator on policy in order to have a chance in the primaries, were in agreement on virtually everything ? especially that Barack Obama must become a one-term president.

Part of the problem was the format. CNN?s decision to allow participants only a half-minute to answer turned the whole event into a breathless political version of ?Jeopardy,? with the difference that the game show is largely based on fact.

Republican presidential contenders

Facts were few and far between in this ?debate.? Instead, there were slogans (the administration?s ?job-killing? policies), rallying cries (?repeal Obamacare?), and the usual distortions and misstatements of the truth that characterize our sound-bite political discourse.

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, for instance, blithely stated that the Congressional Budget Office determined that Obama?s healthcare reform would destroy 800,000 jobs. Politifact quickly pointed out that the actual finding by the CBO was that 800,000 people might leave the workforce because they no longer needed to have a job to get affordable healthcare ? a totally different kind of number ? and the fact-checker branded Bachmann?s statement misleading and ?barely true.?

Yet media pundits declared that Bachmann had established her ?credibility? as a presidential candidate and was one of the winners of the debate.

CNN anchor John King kept cutting answers short so, he said, they could get more audience participation. But the audience isn?t running for president ? the seven people on the stage are. There?s virtually no chance that they would actually attempt to answer an audience question in half a minute. Instead, predictably, they just trotted out the prepared talking point that may have shared a keyword or two with the question.

There was no reason in a two-hour event not to give these candidates three minutes ? or even five! ? for an opening statement with the requirement that they outline two or three policy initiatives they would undertake as president.

The half-minute answers forced the candidates to use Beltway shorthand in their answers that must have been indecipherable to any viewer who does not follow politics for a living. Texas congressman Ron Paul, for instance, babbled on about his fixation with the dollar as a reserve currency ? a concern that is extremely remote for most voters.

The one ?gotcha? highlight was when King challenged former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty to repeat his bon mot from a Sunday talk show about ?Obamneycare? ? accusing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the current frontrunner in the Republican field, of foisting a precursor of the Obama health reform onto his state. Pawlenty declined to confront Romney on the stage, and was declared the ?loser? of the ?debate? by the punditocracy.

GOP hopefuls take aim at Obama

The crowded road to 2012 made its way to New Hampshire as seven republican presidential hopefuls squared off in a debate Monday night.

Whew, 17 more months of this? And think how much more fun it will be when former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman and perhaps former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and maybe even Texas Gov. Rick Perry join this traveling circus. Perhaps answers will be limited to 15 seconds.

Is this any way to choose a presidential candidate?

Oddly, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has already been written off by many because of the troubled start to his campaign, was able to get in some answers with a shred of intellectual honesty. He fielded a question from left field about the space program and offered a cogent argument for public-private sector collaboration. He also cautioned once again about tinkering with Medicare if the American people are opposed.

The real message to emerge from the unison in this forum was that the Republican attack on Obama will focus on the economy. As a new wave of data shows a decided weakening in the economy, this attack hopefully will stiffen the administration?s resistance to draconian budget cuts that will further cripple economic recovery over the next year and a half.

The combination of Republican presidential candidates attacking weakness in the economy and congressional Republicans insisting on budget cuts that will further weaken the economy lends credence to the Democratic suspicion that the whole deficit debate is a cynical ploy by GOP politicians to damage Obama?s reelection chances by sabotaging the economy, regardless of the pain that causes the American people.

Is that any way to choose a president?
