The Bill's Automotive Repairs, Tires & Mobil Gas Guide To Synthetic ...

Full-Service Oil Change Clearwater

Synthetic motor oil has been around for a long time in Palm Harbor and more and more new cars are leaving vehicle manufacturers factories with synthetic in their engines. But a lot of Clearwater car owners don’t really know much about it.

Let’s start with conventional oil – the kind Palm Harbor folks are used to. Conventional oil is made up of naturally occurring hydrocarbon chains, which means its molecules are long and have various lengths. Like a pile of pencils, some of them new and some of them used.

Synthetic oil is man-made. Its molecules are more uniform and regular in shape – more similar to marbles than pencils. Some synthetic oil starts with a petroleum base that’s modified and others are entirely synthesized from other materials.

Synthetic motor oil works better in both hot and cold Clearwater temperatures. It’s more chemically stable so it doesn’t readily evaporate or breakdown in the high heat produced inside your vehicle engine. This means it resists turning to sludge, which is a real engine killer.

Remember that marbles and pencils thing we were talking about? Well, that makes synthetic oil slipperier than conventional oil which means less friction in your engine. Your vehicle engine runs cooler, wears less and lasts longer. You also get a boost in power and maybe even an improvement in gas mileage.

Synthetic oil also lasts longer so you change it less often – which is great for the environment. With longer oil change intervals, you need an oil filter specifically built for the longer service life of synthetic oil. Talk with your considerate Bill’s Automotive Repairs, Tires & Mobil Gas service advisor about synthetic oil and synthetic blends – they might be just what you need to improve engine performance and extend the life of your vehicle.

Paula Deen: Fans serve up heaping helpings of support

The Food Network has dropped Paula Deen from her roster for admitting to making racial comments. Is this the end for the Southern food star? Fans hash it out on social media networks.

By Stir It Up! Editor,?Kendra Nordin / June 25, 2013

Celebrity chef Paula Deen in front of various Smithfield meat products. Smithfield Foods said it was dropping Deen as a spokeswoman days after the Food Network said it would not renew Deen's contract after she said she used racial slurs in the past.

Having been fired from the Food Network, Paul Deen has officially entered the next chapter of her cooking career. Whether it will continue to sizzle or now be shelved in the back of the food-celebrity pantry remains to be seen.

But there's no question that Ms. Deen's fans are now serving heaping helpings of outrage.

"The majority of the people that we all love in the world of entertainment are racist and have other view points that we would cringe and rage over. I don't care if [Paula Deen] is or isn't racist. I just want to watch her make a pie. This is foodnetwork. Not lets play politically correct network," writes April Campbell on the Food Network's Facebook page under a photo of "30-minute pasta salad." More than 400 people showed support by "liking" Ms. Campbell's comment.

Just a few short years ago, Ms. Deen was the Grand Marshal of the 122nd?Rose Bowl parade in Pasedena, Calif. Today the queen of Southern cooking and author of 14 cookbooks has been kicked out of the food court and into the center of swirling racial controversy.

In case you missed the news, The Christian Science Monitor (among others) reported earlier this week that the now former Food Network star and Savannah, Ga., restaurateur said in a May deposition related to a harassment lawsuit, that ?of course? she had used the "n-word," but not in a ?mean way.?

While the Food Network. and now Smithfield Foods, has dropped any and all affiliation with Deen, the passionate response to her confession and follow-up apology video continues to heat up social media sites.

This is the second time during the past year that Deen has been the center of controversy.

The first came with the public announcement in 2012 that she had been diagnosed with diabetes and was changing course in what and how much she ate, embracing low-cal recipes and advocating moderation in portion sizes. In a January 2013 issue of People magazine Deen was profiled along with her husband focusing on the family's collective weight loss and efforts to stay fit.

Deen's cuisine has never aimed much above low-brow. Her original restaurant in Savannah, Ga., was loved for its buffet of Southern fare: sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, meatloaf, fried chicken, greens, hoecakes, and deep-fried Twinkies.

But following her public announcement of her diagnosis, which she had kept private for several years, Deen also became a spokeswoman for Novo Nordisk's diabetes drug Victoza. Her affiliation drew criticism from those who viewed it as a profitmaking venture on a diet-related condition that she was helping to perpetuate through her calorie-laden recipes.

These earnest efforts toward reforming a diet, and the attempts to rectify the most recent PR disaster, have become a bulls-eye target in the blogosphere, drawing reactions from fans and Deen-haters alike.

A "We support Paula Deen" Facebook page already has nearly 307,000 "likes."?

One website in particular that has been hit with a wave of opinions following the racial controversy is The Food Channel ? not to be confused with the Food Network. The Food Channel began in the 1980s as a newsletter and has expanded to a website with cooking videos. The similarity in names has managed to attract the torch burning, pitchfork waving crowd to The Food Channel's website. But surprisingly it is not Deen they are after, it's the Food Network itself for their quick decision to pull the plug on Deen's Food Network show.

The Food Channel became so quickly flooded with responses to the Deen debacle that they posted a response on their website titled, "For Those Who Love Paula Deen":?

"Attention all those who love Paula Deen. We?ve been getting your emails. Your phone calls. We?re pretty sure the good old fashioned mail will soon follow. We get that you are mad about her contract not being renewed. The problem is, you are calling and writing the wrong people.... We are not owned by Scripps. We are independently owned.... So, the best we can do is point you to the Scripps Television Network snail mail address....

On a technicality, Hong Kong and China extradite themselves from Snowden

By allowing Edward Snowden to leave Hong Kong Sunday, hours after the United States sought to extradite him, the government there has rid itself ? and Beijing ? of an awkward diplomatic and legal problem.

Indeed there are strong suspicions in the former British colony that the Hong Kong authorities deliberately gave the fugitive NSA whistleblower time to get out.

The US extradition request, filed on Saturday, ?did not fully comply with the legal requirements under Hong Kong law,? the Hong Kong government said on Sunday, so it had asked Washington for ?additional information.?

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about China? Take our quiz.

In the meantime, there was ?no legal basis to restrict Mr. Snowden from leaving Hong Kong,? the statement added. On Sunday morning, Snowden boarded a plane bound for Moscow, accompanied by legal advisors from the anti-secrecy group Wikileaks according to a post on the group?s Twitter account.

His final destination was unclear.

?I suspect it was ?wink, wink, nudge, nudge, you?ve got 48 hours to get out of Dodge City?,? says Kevin Egan, a Hong Kong lawyer with experience of extradition cases. ?When the government got the clarification it had sought, it might not have been able to let him go.?

?Snowden managed to get away because Hong Kong decided to stall,? adds Claudia Mo, a lawmaker with the pro-democracy Civic Party. ?The matter was too tricky for Sino-American relations ? so Beijing gave instructions he should be given time to leave.?

Snowden had said he planned to challenge any US extradition attempt in Hong Kong courts, declaring his faith in the city?s rule of law. But he faced the possibility of having to stay in jail throughout the court proceedings, which could have taken several years according to local lawyers.

His case was a thorny one for Beijing, anxious to improve relations with the United States and embarrassed by the US fugitive?s presence in Hong Kong, but unable to intervene openly in Hong Kong?s judicial process under the ?one country, two systems? principle that safeguards Hong Kong?s courts.

Hong Kong?s top official, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying had promised that the case would be handled ?in accordance with the laws and established procedures of Hong Kong.? But the politically sensitive case ?would have been quite a test for our rule of law,? says Ms. Mo. ?It would have been a very thorny issue and it is all for the best for both Hong Kong and Beijing that he has gone.?

?This was not a case that Hong Kong or Beijing ever wanted to get involved in,? agrees Mr. Egan. ?The best thing for both of them was for Snowden to leave.?

Snowden not on flight to Cuba, whereabouts unclear

MOSCOW (AP) ? Confusion over the whereabouts of National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden grew on Monday after a plane took off from Moscow for Cuba with an empty seat booked in his name.

In a live TV press conference, the founder of the WikiLeaks secret-spilling organization, Julian Assange, insisted he couldn't go into details about where Snowden is, but said that he was safe.

Snowden has applied for asylum in Ecuador, Iceland and possibly other countries, he said.

An Aeroflot representative who wouldn't give her name told The Associated Press that Snowden wasn't on flight SU150 to Havana, which was filled with journalists trying to track him down. AP reporters on the flight couldn't see him either.

Security around the aircraft was heavy prior to boarding and guards tried to prevent the scrum of photographers and cameramen from taking pictures of the plane, heightening the speculation that he might have been secretly escorted on board.

The Interfax news agency, which has extensive contacts with Russian security agencies, cited a source as saying that Snowden could have flown out in a different plane unseen by journalists.

Others speculated that Russian security agencies might want to keep Snowden in Russia for a more thorough debriefing.

Snowden has not been seen since he arrived in Moscow on Sunday from Hong Kong, where he had been hiding for several weeks to evade U.S. justice and left to dodge efforts to extradite him.

After spending a night in Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, he had been expected to fly to Cuba and Venezuela en route to possible asylum in Ecuador.

Interfax quoted an unidentified "well-informed source" in Moscow saying that Russia has received a U.S. request to extradite Snowden and responded by saying it will consider it. But the same source said that Russia can't detain and extradite Snowden since he hasn't crossed the Russian border.

Justice Department officials in Washington did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Experts said it was likely that the Russians were questioning Snowden, interested in what he knew about U.S. electronic espionage against Moscow.

"If Russian special services hadn't shown interest in Snowden, they would have been utterly unprofessional," Igor Korotchenko, a former colonel in Russia's top military command turned security analyst, said on state Rossiya 24 television.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that it would be "deeply troubling" if Russia or Hong Kong had notice of Snowden's plans and that it would affect their relations with the United States.

The controversy over Snowden could further hurt U.S.-Russian relations, already strained over arguments about Syria and a ban on U.S. adoptions of Russian children.

The Kremlin has previously said that Russia would be ready to consider Snowden's request for asylum.

Aeroflot said earlier that Snowden had registered for the flight using his American passport, which the United States recently annulled.

Ecuador's Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said his government had received an asylum request, adding Monday that the decision "has to do with freedom of expression and with the security of citizens around the world." The anti-secrecy group WikiLeaks also said it would help Snowden.

Ecuador has rejected the United States' previous efforts at cooperation, and has been helping Assange avoid prosecution by allowing him to stay at its embassy in London.

But Assange's comments that Snowden had applied in multiple places opened other possibilities of where he might try to go.

WikiLeaks has said it is providing legal help to Snowden at his request and that he was being escorted by diplomats and legal advisors from the group.

Icelandic officials have confirmed receiving an informal request for asylum conveyed by WikiLeaks, which has strong links to the tiny North Atlantic nation. But authorities there have insisted that Snowden must be on Icelandic soil before lodging a formal request.

Snowden gave documents to The Guardian and The Washington Post newspapers disclosing U.S. surveillance programs that collect vast amounts of phone records and online data in the name of foreign intelligence, often sweeping up information on American citizens.

Officials have the ability to collect phone and Internet information broadly but need a warrant to examine specific cases where they believe terrorism is involved.

Snowden had been in hiding for several weeks in Hong Kong, a former British colony with a high degree of autonomy from mainland China. The United States formally sought Snowden's extradition from Hong Kong to face espionage charges but was rebuffed; Hong Kong officials said the U.S. request did not fully comply with their laws.

The Justice Department rejected that claim, saying its request met all of the requirements of the extradition treaty between the U.S. and Hong Kong.

During conversations last week, including a phone call Wednesday between Attorney General Eric Holder and Hong Kong Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen, Hong Kong officials never raised any issues regarding sufficiency of the U.S. request, a Justice representative said.

The United States was in touch through diplomatic and law enforcement channels with countries that Snowden could travel through or to, reminding them that Snowden is wanted on criminal charges and reiterating Washington's position that Snowden should only be permitted to travel back to the U.S., a State Department official said.

U.S. officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the case.

Caitlin Hayden, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, said, "Given our intensified cooperation after the Boston marathon bombings and our history of working with Russia on law enforcement matters ? including returning numerous high-level criminals back to Russia at the request of the Russian government ? we expect the Russian government to look at all options available to expel Mr. Snowden back to the U.S. to face justice for the crimes with which he is charged."

Still, the United States is likely to have problems interrupting Snowden's passage. The United States does not have an extradition treaty with Russia, but does with Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Even with an extradition agreement though, any country could give Snowden a political exemption.

It also wasn't clear Snowden was finished disclosing highly classified information.

Snowden has perhaps more than 200 sensitive documents, Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on CBS' "Face the Nation."

Snowden has asked for legal advice from former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzon, the judge's office said Monday. Garzon told The Associated Press earlier that he was considering the case but had yet to speak directly to Snowden.

"Before making any decision in this regard it is my intention to study and assess the case in depth as well as to communicate with Mr. Snowden," Monday's statement read.

Garzon is best known for indicting a totalitarian ruler, former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, in 1998, and trying to put him on trial in Madrid for crimes against humanity.

But has been suspended from office in Spain for starting an investigation into killings committed during the Spanish Civil War and the early years of the Franco dictatorship.

(AP Photo/Richard Drew)

(AP) ? Global stock markets reeled Monday, with Shanghai's index enduring its biggest loss in four years, after an increase in China's commercial lending rates sparked fears about the state of the world's second-largest economy.

Analysts say the spike in the country's interbank lending rate was part of an effort to curb the high level of off-balance-sheet lending in China that could threaten the country's financial stability.

But investors feared the move could also hurt economic growth. China's major state-owned banks are unwilling to lend to any but their biggest clients, so the vast majority of smaller businesses must rely on informal lending.

Mainland China's Shanghai Composite Index plummeted 5 percent to 1,968.51 while the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index plunged 6.1 percent to 881.87.

The drop unsettled European markets, where Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.6 percent to 6,077.58 and France's CAC-40 slid 1.1 percent to 3,616.81. Germany's DAX was down 0.7 percent to 7,732.27 after a key business sentiment index rose slightly, suggesting the recovery in Europe's largest economy continues, though at a slow pace.

Wall Street also appeared headed for losses, with Dow Jones industrial futures down 0.6 percent to 14,624. S&P 500 futures lost 0.7 percent to 1,573.30.

Analysts at Moody's Investors Service said that they saw the Chinese central bank's action as "having been the result of a conscious decision" to curb credit growth.

Moody's added that a prolonged credit crunch could threaten Chinese companies, "especially those in the private sector with weak credit quality, because it heightens the risk that banks will scale back lending to those companies." Moody's says that China's central government finances remain strong, but that rapid credit growth and liabilities at the local level pose a threat to growth.

Andrew Sullivan of Kim Eng Securities in Hong Kong said China's new leaders want credit to be available to keep the economy moving but not so much as to promote asset bubbles.

"After six months in power, the new leadership is putting its policies in place. It's signaling that credit is going to remain tight," Sullivan said. "All that is in line with moving China from being an export driven economy to being a domestic consumption economy."

The concerns over China's credit market were magnified by existing worries that access to money will tighten in the world's largest economy, the U.S.

Investors fear what will happen as the U.S. Federal Reserve slows down its monetary stimulus program, which has been pumping $85 billion into the financial system every month and helped many stock indexes reach multiyear or record highs. Markets tumbled last week when Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said the program would likely slow down this year and end in 2014.

The market impact of the Fed's stimulus withdrawal would be magnified if China tightens its monetary policies at the same time.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 2.2 percent to 19,813.98. Japan's Nikkei 225 index, the regional heavyweight, fell 1.3 percent to 13,062.78. South Korea's Kospi lost 1.3 percent to 1,799.01. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 shed 1.5 percent at 4,666.50.

In energy markets, benchmark oil contract for August delivery was down 19 cents to $93.50 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.71 to close at $93.69 in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3100 from $1.3139 late Friday in New York. The dollar rose to 97.94 yen from 97.76 yen.

US balks as Russia prepares to deliver missiles to Syria (+video)

Israel says Russia is preparing to deliver anti-aircraft missiles and launchers to the Assad regime, which the US warns will further destabilize a troubled region.

By Fred Weir,?Correspondent / May 10, 2013

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Secretary of State John Kerry (r.) arrive for their meeting in the Kremlin, Moscow, Tuesday. Kerry is making his case to Putin for Russia to take a tougher stance on Syria at a time when Israel's weekend air strikes against the beleaguered Mideast nation have added an unpredictable factor to the talks.

According to media reports, the US was alerted this week by Israel that Russia is preparing to begin deliveries, perhaps as early as this summer, on a $900-million contract for six S-300 launchers with 144 of the long-range surface-to-air missiles. They are said to be the equivalent to the US Patriot system.

"We have consistently called on Russia not to provide a further supply of weapons to the Assad regime, including air defense systems that are particularly destabilizing to the region," White House press spokesman Jay Carney told journalists?on Thursday.

"I think we have made it crystal clear that we would prefer that Russia is not supplying assistance," to Syria, Secretary of State John Kerry told journalists during a visit to Italy.

"We have previously stated that [these] missiles are potentially destabilizing with respect to the state of Israel," he said.

Israel has carried out two airstrikes on Syrian targets in the past week, dramatically raising the stakes in the Syrian civil war, which is now in its third year.

Introduction of the S-300 into Syria's air defense arsenal could sharply limit the future options not only for Israel but for the US as well, should it decide to intervene in the conflict.

The latest version of the S-300 reputedly has a range of 125 miles, can engage 12 targets simultaneously, and can strike missiles or aircraft at altitudes of up to 20 miles.

The US and Israel waged a long and ultimately successful diplomatic campaign to persuade Russia to renege on a contract it had signed many years ago to provide S-300 missiles to Iran.

But since agreeing in 2010 to cut off arms supplies to Iran, the Kremlin has dug in its heels and refused to sign on to any more sanctions against its dwindling number of client states.

Russia has an estimated $5 billion in outstanding arms contracts with Syria, mostly sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons, tactical surface-to-surface missiles, submarines, warships, and training aircraft.

Though Moscow has not yet commented on the allegation that it is preparing to deliver S-300s to Syria, Russian officials have repeatedly insisted that they are acting within the framework of international law in honoring arms contracts with a long-standing ally that is not subject to any United Nations-approved sanctions.

Moscow also complains that the US continues to sell huge amounts of modern arms to its Arab clients, such as Saudi Arabia, some of whom it says are surreptitiously arming the Syrian rebels.

The fresh accusations against Russia for supplying arms to Syria come just days after Mr. Kerry met with President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin and agreed on the need for Russia and the US to combine efforts in a joint push to find a peaceful settlement to the spiraling Syrian conflict.

Iran election overseers may bar former president

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's election overseers said Monday they will bar candidates who are physically weak from running in next month's presidential election, a reference to a former leader seen as a threat to hard-liners.

Ex-president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani's entry in the race scrambled the equations because of his popularity, reputation and potential to draw voters away from conservatives.

Rafsanjani is 78. Opponents claim that he is too old to run the country, and the body that must decide who can run in the June 14 election indicated it agrees ? as a way of removing the threat to Iran's hard-liners.

Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, spokesman of the Guardian Council that vets election candidates, said the council won't allow candidates who are limited in their physical abilities.

"If a person is able to work only few hours a day, it's natural that he can't be approved," Kadkhodaei was quoted by the semi-official Mehr news agency as saying Monday.

He didn't name any of the candidates, but it was a clear reference to Rafsanjani.

The council is expected to release its list of approved candidates on Tuesday.

The unexpected entry of Rafsanjani into the race has cut into chances of victory for a candidate loyal to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the June 14 vote.

There is also widespread speculation in Iranian media that Esfandiar Rahim Mashaei, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's close confidant, will be barred from running.

Ahmadinejad cannot run for another term as president according to term limits under Iran's constitution. Instead, he has been trying to ensure that a loyalist succeeds him.

Ahmadinejad has openly backed Mashaei, saying "Mashaei means Ahmadinejad, and Ahmadinejad means Mashaei."

Hard-liners accuse Mashaei of being the leader of a "deviant current" that seeks to undermine Islamic rule and compromise the Islamic system. Some critics have even claimed he conjured black magic spells to fog Ahmadinejad's mind.

More than 100 lawmakers have petitioned the council to bar both Rafsanjani and Mashaei from the vote.

Given Mashaei's role in a messy power struggle between Ahmadinejad and the ruling clerics, he is likely to be barred, but Rafsanjani is seen as too respected to be disqualified.

Rafsanjani is a founder of the 1979 Islamic revolution that brought the clerics to power. He was the closest confident of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, spiritual leader of the 1979 revolution. Even Khamenei largely owes his position to Rafsanjani's support.

"If it happens (Rafsanjani is disqualified), the foundation of the ruling system would be brought into question," conservative lawmaker Ali Motahari, who supports Rafsanjani, was quoted by the semi-official ISNA news Monday.

But a headline on a conservative news website, alef.ir, read, "Rafsanjani on the verge of being disqualified."

Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, head of the Guardian Council, warned Friday that those who did not distance themselves from 2009 riots were not eligible to run, referring to the popular protests over the disputed re-election of Ahmadinejad as "sedition."

It was another hint that Rafsanjani could be banned.

A government crackdown in 2009 put an end to street protests, but Rafsanjani remained critical over the way the ruling system dealt with the crisis.

"A man who wants to sit in the president's chair must make his position clear. If he approves the 2009 sedition, he is a seditionist. If he is against it, then he must condemn it," Jannati told worshippers Friday. His comments were perceived as a reference to Rafsanjani.

Political analyst Saeed Leilaz said the organized campaign to discredit Rafsanjani reflects hard-liner concerns over his electoral strength.

"They are shouting because their candidates can't beat Rafsanjani. If Rafsanjani is weak and doesn't enjoy popular support, why are they so angry?" he said.

AHNA O'REILLY FETED AS SHE CELEBRATES TWO CANNES FILMS

Along the water on the yachts where many of the Cannes Film Festival's uber-exclusive parties are thrown, guests are required to take off their shoes before stepping on the boat And for that, "Fruitvale Station" actress Ahna O'Reilly is grateful.

"I can't be in heels for that long ? I'm so uncomfortable!" the smiling actress said Sunday evening aboard the posh Jettee Albert Edouard. "But it's amazing, I love seeing people all dolled up, it's fine."

This is O'Reilly's first trip to the Cannes Film Festival, and she has two films on display. The actress, who was also in "The Help," is starring in "Fruitvale" with good friend Octavia Spencer and also in "As I Lay Dying," in which she was directed by another friend, James Franco, who also stars in the film. Both were in attendance as she was the guest of honor at the event, hosted by the charity Art of Elysium.

"I'm just pinching myself, I can't believe it, and I'm here with some of my best friends in the world representing projects that I'm deeply passionate about, and also here tonight representing the 'Art of Elysium, an organization I care a lot about," she said. "So it's just all of these people that I love in the most beautiful setting where everybody is celebrating their love of cinema, so it's a total dream."

The Art of Elysium has thrown events at Cannes for the past five years. The charity brings artists into hospitals to entertain children afflicted with life-threatening diseases like cancer.

Founder Jennifer Howell said it was a natural to have the event at a film festival: "We're so artist-centric that we want to be tied into what are artists actually do as fundraisers."

O'Reilly is in Cannes for a week as she promotes her two films. She hasn't had much down time to explore the area, but had one to-do on her wish list:

"I'm dying to go to the Hotel du Cap," she said of the ritzy hotel outside of Cannes where some of the festival's top events are held. "Everyone says it's the most beautiful location."

'INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS' AFTER-PARTY

What was inside the "Inside Llewyn Davis" after-party? Plenty of bold-faced names and of course, more folk music.

The movie, which got a rapturous reception when it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday night, is about the folk-music scene in 1960s New York. The Coen brothers film features Justin Timberlake, Carey Mulligan, Garrett Hudland and stars Oscar Isaac.

Timberlake was on hand with wife Jessica Biel, while Hudland cozied with his girlfriend, Kirsten Dunst. Others at the party include Frances McDormand, Grammy-winning producer T Bone Burnett, CBS head Les Moonves and his wife, Julie Chen.

A DJ played music from the film, which is in competition at the festival.

LARS ULRICH WORKING HARDER THAN EXPECTED IN CANNES

Metallica's Lars Ulrich is used to fast-paced action, but even he was a bit taken aback by the pace at the Cannes Film Festival.

"Most people have a romantic notion of Cannes," said Ulrich, who was promoting the band's upcoming film "Metallica Through the Never.

"(But) there is a lot of work that goes on here. And I was a little bit unprepared for. basically the whole infrastructure of worldwide cinema and the movie business is here," he said in an interview on Friday.

"People have a tendency to think that is just red carpet and movie stars and sipping champagne but people come here to work. People come here to sell their films, people come here to finance their films, people come here to create hype."

"Metallica Through the Never" marries the concert film format with a dramatic narrative. Directed by Nimrod Antal and released by Picturehouse, the film stars young "Chronicle" actor Dane DeHann as a member of Metallica's concert tour crew who's sent on a special mission by the band. The movie blends concert footage with a plot that includes CGI effects.

"We wanted to challenge ourselves a little bit and try and do something different and try and bring a little bit more of a film element into it," explains Ulrich.

"Whether anybody loves the film as much as we do we'll have to wait and see in a few months, but the one thing I can guarantee you, which there is no question about, is that it is a very unique film. Nobody has ever seen a film quite like this."

"Metallica Through the Never" is scheduled for release on Sept. 27.

PFT: Ravens face tough decisions on Suggs, Ngata

Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Carolina PanthersGetty Images

If Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano ever gets tired of having to tell people Josh Freeman is his starting quarterback, someone should probably mention to him that it?s kind of his own fault.

Schiano started singing like Tammy Wynette again in relation to Freeman Monday, the day after he was quoted as saying he was ?not against? the notion of starting rookie Mike Glennon instead.

?We have a starting quarterback, and it?s Josh Freeman,? Schiano said, via Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times.

According to the report, Schiano said he?s trying to be honest, and doesn?t mean to put pressure on Freeman by saying such things in the national media.

?I guess nationally, they don?t sit here with me every day like you guys [local media] do,? Schiano said. ?From the day we arrived, our whole program has [been based on] competition, . . . That?s what we believe in. It?s the most competitive sports league in the world. It?s competition, and I love it.

?But we have our starting quarterback, and it?s Josh Freeman. I?m not looking to find another.?

If he really wanted to clear things up, he could always, you know, stop leaving the door open a crack every time he talks about Glennon.

Or, if he wanted a stronger statement on Freeman and how much he loves him under center, he could give him a new contract to replace the final year of his rookie deal.

But it doesn?t appear at the moment that Schiano intends to do either.

And that?s fine, as long as everyone?s clear about the implication sent by those actions.

He likes Freeman, right up until the point he decides he doesn?t.

So Schiano?s apparently going to have to keep clarifying all the things that he keeps saying, whether to the national or local media.

Boris welcomes call for greater financial freedom ? MayorWatch

city_hall_long_2013London?s politicians have welcomed a new report calling for the capital to gain greater control of the money raised within it.

The report has been published by the London Finance Commission which was established by Mayor Boris Johnson under the chairmanship of LSE academic and local government expert Professor Tony Travers.

It calls for an end to ad hoc Government grants for specific projects in favour of greater local control and democratic oversight of tax collection and spending.

Joining Prof. Travers at the report?s launch were Mayor Johnson and Mayor Jules Pipe, leader of London Councils, the group representing the capital?s 32 borough councils and the City of London.

Under the proposals the Mayor and councils would control all property related taxes ? including council tax, stamp duty land tax and business rates ? ensuring they had a guaranteed income stream to fund investment in new projects.

Professor Travers said: ?Wales and, in particular, Scotland are moving towards far greater discretion over taxes. London should be treated similarly.?

He added that the proposals were financially neutral as central Government grants would be reduced ?pound for pound? to match the money gained under the reforms.

Any increase in the capital?s overall pot of money would be driven by economic growth, although Travers warned the reforms would also mean the capital coping with less if the economy slowed.

The report also calls for a relaxation in borrowing limits to allow investment in new in captain projects.

Mayor Pipe said it was essential to move on from an aversion to public sector borrowing and recognise the role it had in enabling specific projects which delivered a sustainable legacy.

Welcoming the report, Mayor Johnson said: ?This excellent report sets out the case for a fairer deal for Londoners, one that gives residents and businesses a closer say over where their hard-earned taxes are spent.

?It recognises the acute need for London to be able to better plan and finance the infrastructure needed to prosper and maintain a great quality of life, in the face of a decade of expansion.?

Mr Johnson added: ?Crucially, we can see that providing London with fiscal freedoms does not come at the detriment of other regions but can in fact help London to generate more jobs and growth across the country.?

The report has also been welcomed by the capital?s business community.

Baroness Jo Valentine, Chief Executive of business group London First, said: ?We agree that London government should retain a greater proportion of the taxes raised in London at levels broadly consistent with current spending. Where further functions are devolved, so too should be tax revenues.

?It?s time to free the Mayor from having to spend his time lobbying central government, and going cap in hand to the Treasury, when he should be focused on positive actions to bring in investment and growth.?

Prof. Travers and Mayors Johnson and Pipe say they will now lobby ministers and politicians from all parties to ensure the report?s recommendations are implemented.

What is the BRCA1 gene? | MNN - Mother Nature Network

Angelina Jolie's announcement today that she recently underwent a preventive double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer made big news on TV, in print and on the Web. While Jolie revealed that her decision and procedure were initially ?kept private, she says that she is now talking about the issue to raise awareness about the kinds of tests and procedures that are available to all women who want to reduce their risk of both breast and ovarian cancers.

?

Her decision certainly has people talking. And one of the biggest questions that we all seem to be asking is what exactly is BRCA1? Here is a primer on the gene that influenced Jolie's decision:

?

What is BRCA1?

Your body has two types of tumor-suppressing genes in breast tissue: BRCA1 and BRCA2. Under normal conditions, those cells stabilize?DNA and prevent the growth of tumors. But mutations in either one of these genes can lead to the development of breast or ovarian cancer.

?

What does BRCA1 stand for?

Breast cancer susceptibility gene 1. (BRCA2 stands for breast cancer susceptibility gene 2.)

?

How does?BRCA1?affect a person's risk of cancer?

According to the National Cancer Institute, "a woman?s lifetime risk of developing breast and/or ovarian cancer is greatly increased if she inherits a harmful mutation in?BRCA1?or?BRCA2. ?BRCA1 mutations may also increase a woman?s risk of developing?cervical,?uterine,?pancreatic, and?colon cancer." The risk is highest for women with a family history of breast or ovarian cancer. In?Jolie's case, her mother,?Marcheline Bertrand, passed away from ovarian cancer at age 56. ?

?

From the cancer.gov website:

?

"According to estimates of lifetime risk, about 12.0 percent of women (120 out of 1,000) in the general population will develop breast cancer sometime during their lives compared with about 60 percent of women (600 out of 1,000) who have?inherited?a harmful mutation in?BRCA1?or?BRCA2. In other words, a woman who has inherited a harmful mutation in?BRCA1?or?BRCA2?is about five times more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who does not have such a mutation."

?

Men with ?BRCA1?mutations also have an increased risk of breast cancer as well as pancreatic cancer,?testicular cancer, and early-onset?prostate cancer.?

?

How do I know if I have a harmful BRCA1 mutation?

A simple blood test performed at a hospital or doctor's office can help detect BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Results take several weeks to come back and testing can cost anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars. Check with your insurance company first about whether or not your insurance will cover the cost. In her op-ed in the New York Times, Jolie acknowledged that the cost of this test "remains an obstacle for many women."

?

Who should get genetic BRCA1 testing?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only women with increased risk from family history are likely to benefit from such genetic testing for BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. Only 3- 5 percent of women who develop breast cancer have a BRCA mutation, and about 10-15 percent of women with ovarian cancer have a BRCA mutation. ?

Catalina exhibit illuminates a dark episode in island's past

The Catalina Island Museum has opened a window into a dark period of life on the island with an exhibition devoted to a pseudoscientist who looted Native American graves for profit eight decades ago.

"The Strange and Mysterious Case of Dr. Glidden," which opened over the weekend, examines the life and times of Ralph Glidden, a hucksterish entrepreneur who in the 1920s and '30s excavated bones and relics from Tongva Indian burial grounds for sale and trade. He also presided over an "Indian museum" literally made of bones and situated on a hill overlooking Avalon harbor.

News articles from the 1920s written by Glidden's publicist describe his "Indian museum" as a "unique and weirdly spectacular institution," with shoulder-blade cornices and windows edged with toe, ankle, wrist and finger bones. Leg and arm bones served as brackets for shelves lined with skulls. Ceiling panels were decorated with human vertebra and rosettes of shoulder blades.

The Catalina Island Museum's look back at Glidden is rooted in a discovery last year. Curator John Boraggina chanced upon boxes of Glidden's journals, ledgers, letters and photographs while searching a musty backroom for items for an exhibit of the World War II era.

More than a year later, the museum has mounted what Executive Director Michael De Marsche calls "a disturbing and troubling exhibition" about Glidden's work. Holocaust museums examine "similar issues: the genocide of a people, the desecration of their graves and the lack of respect for the sacredness of their remains," De Marsche said.

An introduction in the entry corridor sets the scene for visitors. "Any evaluation of the life and work of Ralph Glidden must contend not only with his disregard for the sanctity of human remains, but the near permanent damage he inflicted on research into Native American life on Catalina Island," it reads in part.

Glidden presented himself as "Dr. Glidden" and he old many of the skeletal remains and artifacts he unearthed to prestigious institutions. He longed to churn up evidence of a mythical prehistoric race of giant fair-skinned blue-eyed Native Americans he believed once inhabited the Channel Islands, including Catalina, 26 miles off the coast.

In 1930, Glidden announced that he had discovered a 138-pound soapstone urn that contained the skeleton of a young "royal princess" crouched in an upright position with her fingers clenched over the rim. The urn, he said, was surrounded by the skeletons of 64 children buried in tiers four deep. About five feet below the children, Glidden said, was the skeleton of a man 7 feet, 8 inches tall, with a spear blade embedded in his left side.

There are no known photographs of those skeletons being unearthed. But the urn became an attraction at Glidden's museum, which closed in 1950.

After Glidden's death in 1968, the Wrigley family, of chewing gum fame, bought his collection for $5,000 and then donated it to the Catalina Island Museum. The artifacts ? jugs, bowls, baskets, beads, amulets, rings, shell ornaments, spears, grinding stones, cutting tools and arrowheads ? remain stored under lock and key. Hundreds of skeletons, skulls and thousands of teeth were moved to UCLA.

Wendy Teeter, curator of archaeology at UCLA's Fowler Museum, said the exhibit presents "an opportunity to discuss what these kinds of collectors were doing across the country and to share some of the pain that Native American communities have been feeling all along."

The exhibition includes a documentary film featuring recent interviews with Catalina residents who still recall paying the man whom some knew as "Uncle Ralph" 35 cents to look inside his "museum."

We're sure all of our readers love and appreciate their moms, but we'd also bet that a good number of you still haven't bought her anything yet for Mother's Day ? which is now just four days away. While that sort of procrastination can often times lead to overpaying ("I don't care what it costs, I just need something!"), there are still plenty of deals to be had for last-minute stragglers.

So instead of hastily buying the first overpriced trinket you see, or comically assembling something "homemade" when you haven't so much as held a glue stick since grade school, take a look at these Mother's Day?deals that are still available.

Go Fresh with Flowers

It's true that you're probably not going to find the best deals on flowers the week before Mother's Day, but there are at least a few promotions floating around that can save you a couple bucks or get you a little something extra for your money. Plus, flowers are an extremely easy last minute option. Currently you can snag a ProFlowers bouquet with chocolates and a vase for $39.99 (a low by $20, May 12 delivery adds $14.99), while 1-800-Flowers takes up to 40% off select items and an extra 25% off via coupon code "VME8" (when you checkout with V.me by Visa). You can purchase a credit for a florist, like this $40 FTD?credit for $20, but keep in mind that they frequently won't stack with other promotions that the site is running, especially coupon codes.

Home Console Gaming May Suffer Death By A Thousand Cuts, Rather Than A Major Revolution

Screen Shot 2013-05-11 at 2.01.37 PMThe Ouya is making its way out to backers even now (though my shipping notification still hasn't arrived. Grrr.) and judging by early impressions, it's no silver bullet to take down behemoths like Sony and Microsoft. The $99, Android powered console still isn't fully formed exactly, but it's doubtful that between now and June 25 it'll take on giant-killer proportions. Likewise the recently-announced BlueStacks Android gaming console, which features a subscription-based pricing model, probably won't alone topple the giants.

No Longer Struggle To Lose Weight Anymore - Karen Pedals

Workout while you are on the phone. Rather than sitting down as you talk, stand up and walk around while you are on your phone. It?s not like you are being asked to do aerobics or anything. Just walk around the room or do a few chores, and the extra calories you burn will begin to add up over time.

The following tips below are a good place to start to get you shedding pounds as quickly as possible.

When you are on a diet you may have occasion to eat at a nice restaurant. This is perfectly fine, just realize that portion sizes are restaurants tend to be larger than the suggested size. Before you even start eating, ask for the leftovers container and pack up half your meal. You have not only cut down on calories, you also have the best lunch the following day.

Idea Tip Sharing the dinner table with another person tends to make you eat less, perhaps because you spend time in conversation. You tend to eat more when you eat by yourself because you are focused on the food in front of you.

If you stop eating red meat in your diet you can lose weight. Red meat contains a lot of cholesterol and unhealthy cholesterol. Instead of gravitating towards red meat, opt for leaner meats such as tuna, turkey, chicken or other fish.

Reduce the amount of stress in your life. During times of stress, it can be tempting to eat poorly. When you feel good, you have an easier time keeping your eye on your goals.

Idea Tip Go to bed at a reasonable hour each night. It is recommended that an adult gets eight hours of sleep each night.

Do not buy overly tempting food around the house. If you don?t buy a box of cookies, you don?t have to worry about not eating them. For instance, keep a veggie tray with your favorite veggies and some crackers made of whole grain to eat when you want a quick snack.

Using a smaller plate for your meals can result in you eating less. Most of us eat what is placed before us, regardless of size. You can still feel full if you eat your food from a smaller plate.

Idea Tip If you are trying to lose weight, a pedometer is a great way to help you reach your goals. It will count the steps you take per day.

Fad diets may sound like a way of making you think you will lose weight loss. Even more troubling is the fact that these diets do not educate you on proper nutrition. It is better to select a diet plan that provides you with instruction on how to choose healthy foods.

Avocados can be a great ally in weight loss because of their richness. While they are high in fat, the fat is the good kind ? healthy, unsaturated fat. This food tastes great and has a wonderful texture, which is appealing to dieters. A vegetarian taco or burrito with avocado in place of the ground beef can be as tasty as its meaty counterpart.

Eat your largest meal of the day. If you have a small meal at lunchtime, try eating it during supper instead.

A good way to get rid of saturated fat is to reduce the amount of red meat you consume. A great way to consume red meat is by using it as a centerpiece to a heavy vegetable meal. Instead of consuming potatoes or steak for dinner, try eating borscht with chunks of beef. Another idea is to use smaller bits of meat.

Idea Tip Traveling can make healthy eating difficult at best. Bring your own healthy food instead of eating at roadside restaurants.

You need to start recording the calories or fat grams that you consume. You will have a lot of trouble losing weight if your calorie expenditure exceed your caloric intake.Consuming large amounts of calories can thwart your weight loss impossible.

Walking before you eat a meal is a great way to reduce your temptations while eating. In addition, your appetite won?t be as large, so you won?t eat as much. You don?t have to be fit already for this to be true; it works for overweight and obese people as well.

Rewarding yourself for good behavior on a diet is an important part of a diet being successful. Go shopping, get a massage or take yourself shopping.

Try eating green veggies, they are super foods. These ?super foods? are replete with fiber, minerals and essential nutrients. Eat more green beans, kale, spinach, broccoli and asparagus. Find different ways to prepare and cook these vegetables so you can eat them often.

Idea Tip Replacing your normal daily beverages for water, can really help you to shed off those pounds. Drinking water keeps you from satisfying your thirst with sugar-laden beverages like sodas and some commercial juices.

Weight loss may be thought of math. A pound of human fat is about 3500 calories. Therefore, in order to shed one pound,500 more calories than you take in. This will make it so that you will lose one pound to be lost a week.

Stick with foods that are not high in calories and fill you up. Soups, salads and vegetables before a meal could help you satisfy your hunger making you eat less of your main course that is usually much higher calorie. Drinking water, coffee, or other unsweetened beverages before meals can have the same effect.

Eat with a companion instead of alone to reduce the amount you eat less. Eating alone gives you nothing to focus on cleaning our plates.

Always talk to a professional before using any type of diet pill. Diet pills can cause problems for those with heart conditions, and they can also interact badly with other medications. It is absolutely essential to speak with your primary care physician to make sure it is safe for you to use diet pills.

Idea Tip If you start thinking negatively, rethink your thinking. Without an optimistic mindset, it will be extremely difficult to stick with your program and enjoy the results.

Cook large meals on a weekend and freeze them in smaller portions. Having a freezer full of healthy meals ready to reheat keeps you from making unhealthy food choices like ordering pizza or buying fast food. Bulk cooking also save you money; the fresh ingredients you use can be bought in bulk then using it all up. This will keep them from being spoiled while in the produce drawer.

To get motivation for losing weight, put a piece of clothing that you can?t fit into in the kitchen. Former President Bush gives elderly couple wedding surprise

Former President George W. Bush gave a pair of elderly newlyweds quite a surprise when they returned home from their honeymoon this week.

Larry, 85, and Yolanda Touchon, 72, celebrated their honeymoon by attending the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center. Upon returning to their Amarillo home they discovered a personal note from the former president himself, The Dallas Morning News reports.

?I just about fainted,? the bride said, according to the paper.

The letter reportedly offered the pair of longtime Bush supporters congratulations on their marriage, and thanked them for visiting the Bush Center. Bush added that he and former first lady Laura Bush ?hope the joy you shared on April 21 will always be a source of strength and inspiration.?

?Laura and I send our best wishes for a future filled with love and happiness,? the former president wrote.

The Touchons? honeymoon to the presidential library was a subject of media attention during the event. Their story appeared in The Dallas Morning News, local Texas stations, and was mentioned by the Associated Press.

?We just came down to see George and celebrate our wedding,? Touchon told The Dallas Morning News at the time.

?My daughter just had a fit over this. She thought this was the funniest thing that?s ever happened to her daddy,? the groom said.

?I?m in a state of shock with all these emotions. It?s almost too good to be true,? added the bride.

The Touchons met at a bereavement group. They were married in a Las Vegas chapel last month and have a formal church wedding planned for July.? They told the paper they plan to frame the letter.
