(AP) ? NASCAR fans at Pocono Raceway were advised over public address systems and through social media to take cover when lightning and heavy rain hit the track near the end of the race.

The warnings weren't enough to avoid tragedy at the track on Sunday.

Lightning strikes at Pocono after a rain-shortened NASCAR race killed one fan and injured nine others, one critically, racetrack officials said.

Multiple lightning strikes occurred behind the racetrack's grandstands and outside one of the gates as fans were leaving, Pocono spokesman Bob Pleban said. It wasn't immediately clear how many of the fans were actually struck by the lightning itself or were injured by related jolts.

"Unfortunately, a member of our raceway family here, a fan, has passed away," Pocono President Brandon Igdalsky said in announcing the death. He provided no details about the victim but expressed condolences to his family.

Igdalsky later posted on Twitter, "My family and I are praying for all those that were involved in the lightning strikes. ... Difficult evening for all."

The victim was in or near his car in a parking lot after the race had ended when lightning struck the car, Monroe County Coroner Bob Allen said. Bystanders performed CPR on the man, who had gone into cardiac arrest, until paramedics arrived, Allen said. They took him to the track's medical facility, where efforts to revive him failed. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The Pennsylvania 400 was called because of storms, with 98 of the 160 scheduled laps completed. As the storm approached, the track posted messages on its Twitter page to more than 22,000 followers near the end of the race encouraging fans to "seek shelter as severe lightning and heavy winds are in our area."

The attendance was estimated by the track at 85,000. Public address announcements were made before the storm and the end of the race for fans to take shelter and evacuate the grandstands, Pleban said.

Racetrack officials were reviewing the logs of when the announcements were made, he said. There was no order to evacuate the track premises.

Jeff Gordon, who won the race, said at a post-race news conference that he could hear a huge crack as he walked down the pit road during the storm. "You could tell it was very close," he said. "I mean, that's the thing that's going to take away from the victory, is the fact that somebody was affected by that."

Kyle Manger, a spectator from New Jersey, told The Sporting News that he saw people hit by lightning near the Turn 3 grandstands.

He said when the severe weather began, he and some friends ran to their truck. "The visibility was very poor and all of a sudden (I) saw a bolt of lightning right in front of our windshield," he said. "When it became a little more visible, we saw two bodies next to a destroyed tent with people scrambling."

One person remained hospitalized in critical condition at Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Pleban said. Three people were taken to hospitals with minor to moderate injuries, and five others were treated on the scene, he said.

"We are deeply saddened that a fan has died and others were injured by lightning strikes following today's race at Pocono," NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said. "Our thoughts are with them as well as those affected by this unfortunate accident."

Gordon's team, Hendrick Motorsports, also offered sympathies on Twitter, writing, "Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the lightning" at Pocono Raceway.

Gibson hit with penalty for importing rare woods

Kevork Djansezian / Getty Images file

The maker of Gibson guitars agreed to pay $300,000 to settle a federal case alleging it illegally imported rare woods used in the manufacture of its instruments.

By ERIK SCHELZIG, The Associated Press

Federal prosecutors on Monday announced a deal to drop a criminal case against Gibson Guitar Corp. after the instrument maker acknowledged its importations of exotic wood violated environmental laws.

Nashville-based Gibson agreed to pay a $300,000 penalty, forfeit claims to approximately $262,000 worth of wood seized by federal agents and contribute $50,000 to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to promote the conservation of protected tree species.

"The agreement is fair and just in that it assesses serious penalties for Gibson's behavior while allowing Gibson to continue to focus on the business of making guitars," U.S. Attorney Jerry Martin said in a statement.

Gibson didn't immediately respond to messages left Monday seeking comment. The privately held company is considered one of the top makers of acoustic and electric guitars, including the iconic Les Paul, introduced in 1952.

Gibson's decision to cooperate with the federal Lacey Act banning the import of endangered wood products stood in contrast to a publicity campaign mounted in protest after agents raided Gibson facilities in Memphis and Nashville.

Republicans and tea party members had rallied behind CEO Henry Juszkiewicz at the time he denounced the raids as overzealous federal regulation that threatened American jobs.

"We feel totally abused," Juszkiewicz said immediately after the August 2011 raid. He vowed at the time the company would "fight aggressively to prove our innocence." Soon afterward he was invited by House Speaker John Boehner to attend a joint session of Congress in which President Barack Obama delivered a speech on jobs.

A few weeks later a company spokesman claimed that a federal agent had "lied" in affidavits claiming the CEO knew the wood seized by authorities was illegally imported.

Those affidavits supporting the search warrant that authorized the raids alleged that shipments of imported Indian ebony and rosewood were given false labels to circumvent import restrictions.

The settlement says a Gibson employee learned during a 2008 trip to Madagascar ? the source of some of the ebony wood that was seized ? that it was illegal to import unfinished wood and sent a report about it to his superiors, including company President David Berryman.

The exotic woods used in such guitars are considered integral to the sound they produce. And artists who have played Gibson instruments range widely from country stars Chet Atkins and Maybelle Carter to rockers Pete Townshend of The Who and Eric Clapton to jazz artists Larry Carlton and Les Paul.

George Gruhn, who owns a vintage guitar shop in Nashville, said he wasn't surprised that Gibson officials accepted the settlement.

"Regardless of the merits of the case on either side, it would have cost more than that by far to pursue it," he said. "Even if they thought they conceivably they could win, it would have probably cost more than $1 million to do it."

Gruhn said the resolution of the Gibson case doesn't ease his concerns about the Lacey Act, which initially halted the trade in endangered wildlife goods, like ivory, but in 2008 added rare woods to the import ban.

"The problem is that virtually every instrument prior to 1970 contains Brazilian rosewood," he said. "Even on a Gibson LGO, which was their cheapest student guitar."

Justice and Interior Department officials said in a September letter that those who "unknowingly possess" an instrument made from illegally imported materials don't have a criminal problem.

Last year, Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican, and fellow U.S. Rep. Jim Cooper of Nashville, a Democrat, introduced legislation they said would protect people from charges for unknowingly possessing illegally imported wood, and would require the federal government to establish a database of forbidden wood sources.

A coalition of environmental, logging industry and musicians' groups oppose the measure.

Increased productivity, not less energy use, results from more efficient lighting

ScienceDaily (Aug. 6, 2012) ? Two researchers have reprised in the journal Energy Policy their groundbreaking finding that improvements in lighting -- from candles to gas lamps to electric bulbs -- historically have led to increased light consumption rather than lower overall energy use by society.

In an article in the journal Energy Policy, Sandia researcher Jeff Tsao and Harry Saunders of The Breakthrough Institute in Oakland, Calif., predicted in 2010 that the same phenomenon might apply to light-emitting diodes (LEDs), poised to take over from the Edison light bulb as the next, more efficient light source of choice.

But their main point, as three centuries have shown, was that increased light availability leads to increased productivity. Workers are no longer forced to stop shortly after nightfall, as they had in primitive, candle-illuminated huts, but instead could continue producing through the night in homes, offices, factories, and even at outdoor locations not serviced by power lines.

The original paper, titled "Solid-state lighting: an energy-economics perspective," drew attention to the increased productivity made possible by better lighting, rather than societal energy-savings mistakenly cited as a feature of improved lighting technologies.

Misinterpretations of the original paper by two widely read international media outlets led to the confusion that Tsao and his co-authors had shown that lighting efficiency improvements were no improvements at all. This is because reductions in neither overall energy usage nor overall lighting costs would occur.

The researchers, in the upcoming article, titled "Rebound effects for lighting," said the 2010 article generated both interest and confusion in the popular press and in the blogosphere. "This communication seeks to clarify some of this confusion for the particular benefit of energy economists and energy policy specialists," they wrote.

"We were motivated to publish something, even if short, in Energy Policy, because that journal serves a community very different from that served by the Journal of Physics, where our original article was published," Tsao says. "We thought that many in the energy economics community were still unaware of the work, and of the benefit -- even when there is no direct energy-use savings -- of energy efficiency and other welfare-enhancing technologies."

Other authors of the 2010 article included Sandia researchers Mike Coltrin, Jerry Simmons and Randy Creighton (retired). Harry Saunders is also associated with Decision Processes Inc. in Danville, Calif.

The work was supported by Sandia's Solid-State Lighting Science Energy Frontier Research Center, which is funded by DOE's Office of Basic Energy Sciences.

How to Deal With Long Distance Relationships - Military Dating

If you are in or are about to begin a military relationship, you need to prepare yourself for the road ahead. Military relationships can be very hard and it does take quite a bit of getting used to. But along with that hardship comes quite a few rewards, such as pride, health and dental coverage at considerably low rates, a guaranteed paycheck regardless of hours worked, a new ?extended? family, opportunities to travel and see many different places, and freedom and flexibility to work towards your goals and dreams while they are away. Despite all of these benefits, being in a military relationship means learning to adapt to this new lifestyle and learning how to cope with the distance and difficulties you will face.

Prepare

When you?re in a military relationship, you have to prepare for deployment, first and foremost. Getting yourself ready for this big change will help ease you into the entire process. By connecting with a good support group or forum, you can connect with other military wives as much as possible to help you get through this hard time as well as have someone to talk to that has gone through exactly what you?re going through.

They may be able to keep your mind off of things and offer tips on coping through it. While your significant other is away during deployment or training, keep in contact with them as often as possible and cherish every moment you have with them. During this time away from each other, you should work towards your own personal goals and also try to limit how much news you watch. It will make it easier on you, because every time you hear anything military-related, you?re automatically going to be extremely tuned in.

Build A Trusting Relationship

It?s very important that you both trust each other very much because while he is away, distrust will only hurt your relationship tremendously. It?s only natural that you both will feel some level of jealous and mistrust while you are apart, but the less of course the better. Communicate about everything possible and be completely honest with each other, but also understand that sometimes there will be things he cannot reveal that are work-related. Trust his decision about what not to talk about. Communicate at every opportunity you can to keep the relationship as strong as possible and cherish the time together when he returns.

Get Social with Other Wives

Take time out to meet the other people in your sweetie?s unit. Doing so will help you connect with other military wives and girlfriends who are going through the same things you?re going to through and this will help you find others who are more compassionate to your situation. Sometimes just having someone to listen to your worries and let you know it will be okay is all you need to better cope with the situation. If you are a military girlfriend, making friends with other military wives may help you learn more information while your honey is away.

Most often, the unit will tell things to the wives that they might not necessarily tell the girlfriends, and having a military wife friend helps because she can fill you in on the stuff you?ve missed. The unit will often have functions in which you can go to and meet the other men from the unit a well as their wives and girlfriends. Joining an online military forum or support group will also help. Ensure you browse around and find the right one for you. Different groups will have different personalities, so find the one that best suits your needs. Forums and groups can help answer your questions, listen to you when you need someone to talk to, and they definitely understand your situation better than anyone else does.

One great site to help you find a good support group or forum for your man?s unit is located at this address: Military SOS. This place provides a plethora of great information to help you find friends, support groups, advice on helping kids deal with military life, and much, much more. It?s great for spouses and significant others alike, no matter what your situation.

Learn Military Time

Get used to it. Your man will be referring to everything in military time, so get yourself acquainted with it and get comfortable with it. The less often he has to explain what time it is to you, the better. Also, get used to arriving early for everything. Military men are punished when they are late, so it will become like second nature to them to ensure they are early to everything. Prepare to be at least about 15 minutes early for everything.

For example, 3:00pm is no longer 3:00pm. Now it?s 1300 hours, just as 1:00am is now 0100 hours. Here?s a great chart located on this site that can help you help more accustomed to military time and how it?s used: http://www.militaryconnection.com/military-time.asp

Learn Military Acronyms

Every branch has its own set of acronyms and lingo, so learn it as soon as possible. When he tells you about something using an acronym, ask him to translate it so you can write it down and remember it next time. This will help, just as learning military time, because it will cut down on his time spent explaining it to you over and over and it will provide more time for you to focus on more intimate topics.

You might be more familiar with some of the acronyms used often on television, such as AWOL or MIA, but what about the others used a little less often? For example, do you know what it means when you?re beau says, ?If I want to change my MOS, my CO said I need to take the APFT first,?? Translation: ?If I want to change my military occupational specialty, my commanding officer said I need to take the Army Physical Fitness Test first.? Better brush up on some of those terms ASAP! Check out this site to look of some of the most commonly used ones: http://www.fas.org/news/reference/lexicon/acronym.htm.

Be Patient

Not only must you be patient while he away during deployment, but also when arriving on the base to visit him. Unless he is with you, it will take some time to get onto the base. They will often search your vehicle as well as insist you provide your license, registration, proof of insurance, and may even have to call your man to check your reason for being on the base. The line is often very long to acquire a visitor?s pass as well, so bring something to do while you wait.

Be supportive when you learn of your man?s deployment and don?t try to make him feel bad for fighting for his country. He has made a big decision to join, and deployments give him a chance to use what he has learned in training. You may be scared because you don?t know what he will be facing, but supporting him and rusting in his abilities will help him through this tough time as well. He will feel guilty enough that he is leaving you and his family behind, so be supportive and understanding so you can make it as easy as possible for him.

Burnett remains unbeaten vs. Reds

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:57 p.m. ET Aug. 5, 2012

CINCINNATI (AP) - Clint Hurdle decided to keep A.J. Burnett pitching on his regular day so he didn't miss the showdown with the Cincinnati Reds.

The Pittsburgh Pirates had a day off Thursday that allowed Burnett to face the Reds and improve to 7-2 after a team loss.

Burnett remained undefeated against the Reds this season and Starling Marte hit a tiebreaking two-run triple to help the Pittsburgh Pirates salvage the finale of their three-game series with a 6-2 win on Sunday.

"I've never had an ace before," Hurdle said. "We have a guy with the experience A.J. brought with him.

Neil Walker hit a two-run home run and All-Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen added a solo shot as Pittsburgh snapped Cincinnati's win streak at five and cut the Reds lead in the National League Central Division to 4 1-2 games.

Burnett (14-3) allowed just one hit after the first inning and retired 18 straight batters before yielding two walks with two outs in the ninth. He allowed three hits and two runs with three walks and seven strikeouts in 8 2-3 innings to improve to 3-0 in three starts against the Reds this season.

"After the second inning he was just rock solid. He got some quick outs," Hurdle said.

Burnett shrugged off the stopper's tag.

"I just want to win whatever it takes, if it's my day it's my responsibility."

Joel Hanrahan got the final out for his 32nd save.

A heavy rain began to fall in the top of the ninth and likely prevented Burnett from completing the game.

"It was nothing I haven't faced before," Burnett said. "I probably should have called time but with three outs to go, I was trying to get through it real quick."

The Reds went into the game with 22 wins in their last 25 games and 15 of their last 16. They are still 16-4 since All-Star first baseman Joey Votto left the lineup with a torn meniscus in his left knee that required surgery.

A pennant race is a new experience for most of the Pirates. Not Burnett.

"I've been in October. This is nothing like October," Burnett said.

Still the win prevented the Pirates from falling too far behind. The Reds badly wanted a sweep.

"You get greedy," Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker said. "When you start winning every day, two out of three isn't good enough. We went 5-2 on the home stand, but you always want more. We're in a situation now where, hopefully, we get some guys back. Our guys have fought through some adversity."

Jay Bruce doubled in the first, but Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead in the second on Walker's 12th homer of the season, a two-run shot that tied Walker's season high.

After Stubbs tied the score with his 14th homer of the season, the Pirates went back ahead on Marte's two-run triple that followed singles by Gaby Sanchez and Clint Barmes.

Homer Bailey (9-7) allowed nine hits and four runs with one walk and three strikeouts in 4 2-3 innings on Sunday.

"Homer wasn't real sharp," Baker said. "Burnett was real sharp. He got into trouble early, but he got out of it and sailed along until the ninth. He's tough. He's rediscovered himself. He's not 14-3 for nothing."

McCutchen led off the ninth against Logan Ondrusek by tying his single-season career high with his 23rd homer of the season and first since July 17.

"Considering it's been a while and I haven't been feeling that great, it felt good," McCutchen said.

NOTES: Reds 2B Brandon Phillips missed his fifth straight start with a strained left calf. ... The Pirates finished 6-4 on their longest road trip of the season. They open their longest homestand Monday with a four games against Arizona, the first of 11 in 11 days in Pittsburgh. ... The Reds open a seven-game road trip in Milwaukee on Monday. They've won nine consecutive road games, the longest active streak in the National League and the team's longest since a 10-game run from July 27 through Aug. 13, 2005.
