Ovens can accumulate mess very quickly and if you don?t act just as quickly, your oven can get covered in droplets, dried food or residue that makes future baking tasks even harder. Oven cleaning might not sound very enticing, but a little work can go a long way to keeping your oven in sparkling condition.

The best way to keep your oven clean is to take care with what you?re cooking. Foods with a potential to overflow or leak fillings are particularly hazardous. Use waxed baking paper to line trays and pans, so that liquid fillings don?t spill out onto the racks. Make sure you have the right sized tin for any cake or pudding and that the lid for your casserole or stew fits properly onto its pot. You can prevent overflow this way.

The quicker you act, the better your chances of removing leftovers. Once the oven has cooled down after use, check to see that no food remnants are stuck on the rack. This tends to happen with dishes that have a cheese or loose topping, like pizzas or bakes. Immediately remove loose food scraps, then take out each shelf rack individually. Wipe them down with a damp warm sponge (scraping from a metal scourer or knife can cause severe scratches) and apply pressure to items like stuck-on cheese, chocolate or cake mixture.

The faster you act, the better your chances of removing unsightly residue. Once the oven has cooled down after use, check to see that no foodparticles are stuck on the racks or in the baking dish at the bottom. This often happens with foods that have a cheese topping or loose garnishes, like pizza. Remove any loose items, then take out each rack individually from the oven. Wipe each one down with a warm damp sponge (scraping with a metal scourer can cause scratches) and apply pressure when wiping off any stuck-on cheese, melted chocolate or cake mix.

Use paper towel or a cloth dampened with all-purpose cleaner to wipe any oil or fat spattered on the oven walls and base. The softer the material, the less chance of making scratches on oven parts. For thick messes (like spilled sauces), remove all racks from the oven and use paper towel or a sponge to soak up and wipe away the mess.
